He graduated from Washington High School in June, 1945 and then served in the Army at Ft. Lewis until his discharge in late 1946. John excelled at organization and detailed record keeping and worked for the railroad through various mergers for 39 years.
His interests included ceramics, gardening, music, quilting, baking and candy making. He enjoyed trying new recipes and sharing his candies and baked goods with friends and family. John donated his time and handiwork, making quilts, lap robes and knit hats for various charities. He had the prettiest garden in the neighborhood and shared plants, bulbs and seeds.
John is survived by his sisters, Caroline Passarge of Portland and Martha Allwander of Eugene. He was predeceased by his parents; his brother Edward, and his sisters Edna Ashmon, Helen Relfe and Esther Bixel.
John was buried privately at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to your favorite charity or the Oregon Food Bank.
