

He was born in Jackson Heights, LI, New York on June 13, 1944. He lived briefly in Miami, FL.
Joe enlisted in the USAF in 1965 serving in Da Nang, Viet Nam in the Security Service, from 1967-1969.
Upon returning from Viet Name, Joe chose to settle and reside in Portland, OR. He graduated from the University of Oregon, School of Communications and Journalism and subsequently worked in news broadcast media including KOIN-TV and area print media. Joe sought justice in the stories he reported on and/or wrote. He was noted for his defense of Tonya Harding, a world class and Olympic skater.
He was a member of Lane County Ch. of Viet Name Veterans against the War, and Veterans for Peace. He enjoyed reading fiction and non-fiction, screening films, art and creativity, his cats, and keeping in touch with an international set of friends whom he occasionally visited and kept in communication with.
He is survived by his brother Terence M Haran (Betty) of Clarkston, MI, two nephews, Robert (Paula) of Grosse Pte. Farms, MI, great uncle to Michael, and Anna Haran; Matthew (Jennifer) of Hermosa Beach, CA, Henry and June; nice Susan Christensen (Jeffrey) of Grosse Point Park, MI, Augustine and Maxwell.
He is survived by cousins: Mary H Bois, Susan Haran, Martha H. Sullivan, Jamie H. Flaherty, Frank Haran, Judy H. Bowser, and Susanne Lanza.
Joseph will receive a military committal service at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, OR, on August 16, 2021 at 11:30 a.m.
