Joyce was born in Chelsea, South Dakota to parents Ralph and Mabel Wood Shafer. She grew up in South Dakota, and during World War II served as a WAVE (in the US Navy). As an educator, Joyce taught in South Dakota, and for 27 years in the Portland Public School District. On February 6, 1948, she married Clarence Hulse who preceded her in death.
Joyce was a member of First United Methodist Church in Portland, and also enjoyed membership in P.E.O. Chapter BD and Phi chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was always ready to volunteer with many organizations and groups affiliated with her community at Terwilliger Plaza.
She is survived by loving nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and their children and a host of other family members and friends.
There will be a memorial service Saturday, September 5th, 2015 at 11:00 am in First United Methodist Church, 1838 SW Jefferson Street, Portland, Oregon 97201.
