Layne was born on September 2, 1940 to Walter “Buck” and Clarice Brannan in Redding, CA. His family moved several times before they established Salem, OR as their home. Layne graduated from North Salem High School in 1958 and later went on to study Finance at the University of Oregon.
After graduation, he had many adventures as a sailor in the Navy, a stockbroker, a pharmaceutical representative and various other positions. Later, Layne began working for the State of Oregon where he began his career as a management analyst for the Oregon Public Utility Commission.
In March of 1975, Layne asked Sharon out for a date and they wed in September that same year. Layne and Sharon enjoyed 44 years together which they shared with their blended family.
After 24 committed years at the PUC, Layne retired in 1995. He spent many years traveling and golfing with Sharon, and enjoying hobbies like woodworking and lapidary. However, his greatest joy was neither specific hobbies nor activities, but laughter-filled visits with family and friends.
Layne was preceded in death by his parents Walter and Clarice Brannan, and his sister Jeanine Tuss. He will be dearly missed by his wife Sharon; daughters, Brooke Sleeper (Greg), Taranna Patton (Mark), and Trista Self (Kevin); grandchildren, Lexi Adams (Scott), Erica Colvin, Stewert Syverson and Larissa Sleeper; great grandson Klay Adams; sister Lavonne Hemann; and many extended family and friends.
Honors Ceremony at Willamette National Cemetery and Celebration of Life will be held at a later date to be determined.
