Lorris Ivan Child, born in Portland, Oregon passed away on 31 January 2024 after 94 wonderful years. Ivan was a member of the “silent” generation… and, if you knew Ivan, there was nothing that was “silent” about him. He would tell you exactly what was on his mind, what you were doing wrong (occasionally right), and how to get things done better; regardless if what he was saying was politically correct or not, you knew exactly where he, and you, stood.
Ivan’s life was strongly influenced by growing up during the great depression, World War II, the start of the Cold War and the Korean War… “what it taught me was to treat everyone like you meant to be treated, do the best you can at whatever you are doing, and read and learn all you can; because it doesn’t make any difference how old you are, you can always learn something new.”
Following his graduation from Benson High School and an introduction to college life at Oregon State University and Portland State University, Ivan enlisted in the Army in 1950 and quickly found himself stationed on the west coast of France with the 81 Engineer Boat Company. After completing his service in 1952, Ivan went back to Oregon State University and finished his degree in engineering-production technology… and thus began his 34-year career with Boeing. Ivan would always tell stories about his work projects: in particular his involvement with the development of the lunar rover; something he was extremely proud of.
Ivan and Joanie married in 1983, and had a blended family of 8 children: Jay Child, Lisa Cardillo, Andy Child, Todd Child, Yana Scollard, Patty Anderson, Linda Cooper, and Bob McGillic.
After Ivan retired in 1990, he thoroughly enjoyed spending a lot of his free time being with family and pursuing his hobbies and passions in life: golfing, square dancing, fishing, hunting, agate-hunting, lapidary work, playing cribbage, growing tomatoes and playing Yahtzee. Two of his favorite enjoyments in life were Moscow mules and black licorice ice cream.
Ivan was predeceased by his wife Joanie, Gerry Cooper, Mark Anderson, and Claire McGillic. Ivan is survived by his 8 children, 13 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. Ivan will be missed but never forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the food bank nearest your home.
A private service will be held at a later date.
