

Marguerite Thompson, long time resident of Salem, Ore. died Easter Sunday evening, April 24, 2011 at Mary’s Woods At Marylhurst, Lake Oswego, Ore. She was 95. Born in Brighton, Iowa, she attended the University of Iowa and moved to Salem in 1950 where her physician husband, Douglas, established his ear,nose and throat practice. Married for 63 years, they raised six children, the youngest Mark, born with Down’s Syndrome.
Marguerite was active in the Salem medical community and a strong supporter of Catholic education in Salem: St. Joseph School, Sacred Heart Academy, Serra Catholic and the Sisters of the Holy Names. Before there were state funded programs to support the developmentally challenge, she and her husband became founding members of Shangri-la Corporation and Marguerite, throughout her life, remained a passionate voice and advocate for those with special needs, serving on a State Advisory Council for the disabled. She founded “Shamrock Circle” group at Queen of Peace Parish, to provide this “circle of friends” with religious experiences and supportive community.
Marguerite loved travel, See’s candy, the occasional “casino” night , bird watching and puppies, the Iowa Hawkeyes and family gatherings. She was a cherished “grandma” to eight and “great grandmother” to two.
Survivors include daughter, Holy Names Sister Lynda Thompson; son Jack Thompson of Salem; daughter, Mary Sue Stoner of Salem; son, W. Chris Thompson, MD of Ontario, Ore.;son Mark J. Thompson of Salem. She is predeceased by her son, Douglas A. Thompson, MD of Vancouver, Wash. and her husband.
Visitation will be 10 – 11 a.m. with Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m., all on Tues. May 3 at Mary’s Woods at Marylhurst Convent Chapel, 17400 Holy Names Dr., Lake Oswego.
