1922 - 2010
Marjorie Ellen White was born July 17, 1922 in Tillamook, Oregon. She was the second daughter of her parents Ira and Henrietta White. While her mother remained in the hospital, Marjorie was cared for by her father. Creating a bed out of a drawer, Ira began the special bond with his ‘Bridget.’ Throughout her life Marjorie was her daddy’s little girl.
Ira White was a salesman and accountant. His career took the family to several coastal cities, Tillamook, Seaside and finally to Astoria. Marjorie and her sister Jane grew up in the comfort of a small town community. Marjorie was a popular girl and in her teens began a life long love of golf. Marjorie graduated from Astoria High School and attended Business College. After completion she worked in the Astoria area.
During World War II, Marjorie worked for the naval base at Tongue Pointe. She enjoyed the work and the social life the Navy brought to Astoria. It was here she met her first husband, Grant Bell. They were married in 1943. After Grant’s discharge they moved to Portland. They soon welcomed their son, Douglas Bell and daughter Molly Bell.
The family settled in the Irvington area of Portland, where Marjorie was a homemaker. Her interests evolved around her children and their school activities. She was active in the Phenix Club, volunteered at Albertina Kerr Center and Good Samaritan Hospital. She continued her love of golf and became an avid bridge player. Grant and Marjorie divorced in 1972.
Marjorie met her husband Lloyd Fries while working as a unit secretary in the ICU at Emmanuel Hospital. They were married in 1976. Lloyd Fries is an active Masonic member and was a Portland Rosarian. Marjorie enjoyed the many social activities and services these organizations offered. During their marriage they traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe. In the later years, Lloyd Fries was the primary caregiver of his wife as her health declined.
Marjorie treasured her grandchildren, Keriann Hunter, Brian and Alison Bell, Justin Donaghy and Daniel and Carolyn Rice.
Marjorie is survived by her husband, children Douglas Bell (Meg), Molly Bell, step daughter Deborah Donaghy (Michael), step son Hilbert Rice (Patrice), grandchildren Keriann Hunter (Michael), Brian and Alison Bell, Justin Donaghy, and Daniel and Carolyn Rice.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Orlie Russell Fund for special needs children of Gul Reazee Grotto or Washington County Hospice.
A memorial service will take place in Bethany Presbyterian Church on Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 1:00 PM.
