Martin was born in Portland to Peter and Malve Schmidt, and lived in the Portland area his entire life, attending Columbia Preparatory School, and graduating from the University of Portland. Martin was a US Navy officer, serving 4 years on the LST 658 during WWII. He married Nancy Teufel in September of 1950, and soon after began developing their family cut greenery and cut flower business Martin Schmidt & Sons. He is survived by his wife Nancy, sons Karl (Julie), Peter, and Steve (Jan), 5 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.
