Michael Alan Sahling passed away on March 15, 2025, at the age of 41 in Vancouver, Washington. Born on May 7, 1983, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Mike grew to be a man of deep loyalty, courage, and humor.
Mike graduated from LaCenter High School, where he participated in both the soccer team and the school band, playing the trumpet. After high school, he briefly worked at a local casino before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in 2003. During his service, he was deployed in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Known by his call sign "Shark Bait," Mike served as a Lance Corporal & Rifleman and was a decorated veteran, receiving two Purple Hearts for his bravery and dedication. He was honorably discharged after four years of commendable service.
Post-military, Mike faced challenges due to injuries sustained during his service but found solace and support in his service dog, Gracie. This companionship not only brought Mike out of his shell but also spurred him back into day-to-day activities. Mike retired Gracie in 2020, but she remained by his side, always dedicated to him.
Mike reconnected with Michelle Suchy, a high school acquaintance, and the couple married on August 16, 2014. Their marriage was marked by deep affection, evident in their daily exchanges of love notes, poetry, and flowers. It was, in Mike's words, "A Marriage Stronger Than Steel" that was evident to all who knew them.
A culinary enthusiast, Mike was particularly skilled at BBQ and smoking meats, constantly experimenting with new brines and rubs. His smoked brisket was legendary among friends, family, and even casual acquaintances like contractors or vendors who worked at their home. Michelle's coworkers also benefited from his culinary endeavors, much to their delight. In addition to cooking, Mike was an avid video gamer and movie buff, boasting a collection of over 2,000 movies. He cherished his role as an uncle and looked forward to outdoor adventures with his nephew, Xavier.
Mike is survived by his loving wife, Michelle Sahling; his mother, Linda Sahling; his sister, Alaina Brazington (Justin); his nephew, Xavier Brazington; and many extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Jack (John) Sahling.
Mike's life was a testament to his unwavering dedication to his family, his country, and anyone in need. His charismatic spirit, sense of humor, and steadfast loyalty will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
