Patricia A.(Patty) Coen was born March 2, 1942 in Tillamook, Oregon. She was the first child of Albert and Vera Coen. She joined three older sisters from Vera’s first marriage. She was raised in Rockaway, Oregon, until the seventh grade, when her family moved to Portland. She attended David Douglas High School, then the largest high school in the state, and graduated in 1959. That same year, she married Ted Kious, the boy next door. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Leanne, Janelle and Scott. Ted was killed in an accident while working for Southern Pacific in 1967. In 1969, Patty married John Beauchamp, a man she had known since high school. They divorced in 1983. The following year, she married George Hermann, whom she had met while bowling in a league where he worked the desk. George introduced her to square dancing and she found her two greatest loves.
Patty was introduced to round dance cueing by Joyce Buzzard and Cindy Marberry. She cued her first full dance in April 1986. From 1988 to 1991, she cueing for three clubs in the Portland area. In 1991, Patty and George were hired to cue and call for the Oaky Doaks square dance club in Oak Grove, Oregon. The following year, she was hired by George and Nancy Clark to run their square dance shop in Oregon City, where she really blossomed. She enjoyed meeting dancers, helping them find the perfect outfits, and being a clearing house for square dance information.
George and Patty left the Oaky Doaks in 2010. The following October, George was hired by the Independence Wagon Wheelers, but since the club already had a cuer, Patty became “just” a caller’s wife. In 2015, when the club decided to change cuers, Patty stepped into the role. Due to health reasons, she retired from the square dance shop in 2005 and officially retired from cueing in 2021.
Patty passed away from natural causes on March 15th, 2025. She was preceded in death by her parents, older sisters Lois, Joyce and Shirley. She is survived by her sister Sandee Norman and brothers Bill and Tom Coen. She also leaves behind her three children: Leanne (Manny) Agena, Janelle (Dale) Keithley and Scott Kious. Additionally, she is survived by six stepchildren: Lynda (John) Lovell, Michelle Ashlock, T Kaye (Mike) Davis and Scott (Stephanie), Dan (Summer), and Richard (Sabine) Hermann. Patty was blessed with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She really enjoyed all her family.
