

Paula Jeanne Smith Barnes passed away on December 26, 2024. Paula was born on November 25, 1927 to Hilda and Girard Smith in Billings, Montana. When she was young, her family moved to Weizer and then to Boise, Idaho. She attended Boise Junior College and then continued her education at the University of Idaho majoring in Medical Science. Paula was a member of the Alpha Phi Sorority. After college, she attended a program at St. Luke's Hospital in Spokane and graduated with a certificate in Medical Technology. After her children were in school, she worked for several years as a Lab Technician at Clackamas Medical Laboratory working for Drs. Payne, McCarthy and Mayer.
While at the University of Idaho, Paula met WWII veteran Harold Barnes, whom she married in 1951. They moved to Oregon where they settled in Portland. She had five children and when her children were young, she was very involved in PTA, church, and her children's activities. She loved being around her family and hosted many family events.
Paula had many interests including reading, gardening, cooking, baking, sewing, swimming, listening to music, wine tasting, family reunions, watching OPB and CNN and attending her kids and grandkid's sporting events, especially soccer. She hiked with her hiking group, The Hotliners, into her 80s. She also enjoyed playing bridge, visiting with friends, and watching Trailblazers and Mariners games and she was a regular volunteer for several years at Providence Milwaukie Hospital.
Paula is survived by her children - Elise Luke (Jim), Steven Beaudry Barnes (Marcia), David Barnes, Richard Barnes (Diana) and Robert Barnes (Rachel); her grandchildren - Christie Robinson (Jeff), Julie Mickey (Dain), Scott Barnes, Heather Mulford (Reed), and Megan Barnes; and great grandchildren - Avery and Evan Robinson, Jax Barnes, and Bentley Mulford; Nieces - Sue Averett and Vickie Pritchett and Nephews - Cris Barnes and Curtis Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband Harold Barnes, her sister Nathalie Averett, her brother Jerry Smith, and her grandson Sean Barnes.
Paula's family would like to thank all of the residents at Royalton Place who included Paula in their activities and would like to thank Lucica Muresan of King Road Adult Care Home for her loving care. Paula's family would also like to thank all of the friends and family who faithfully visited her over the past year, and Providence Hospice and Jeff Robinson for their medical guidance and support. We love all of you.
Paula was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and friend and she will be greatly missed.
