Pelelini Torbett was born in Pago Pago, American Samoa on January 1, 1943, to parents Solofua Saumalu and Matalena Toilolo. When she was 16, she moved to Hawaii. There she married her first husband, Fatu-Legae’e Mauga, and had four children. Later in life Pelelini remarried Jay “Crispy” Torbett who raised her kids as his own and was the true love of her life.
Pelelini was the kind of person who could win others over easily with her beautiful smile. She was a generous woman who always cared for others and always gave to those in need. She was a devoted Catholic and true prayer warrior. Pelelini was all about honor, integrity, and good character. One of her famous quotes is, “Do the right thing!” - she always taught her kids and grandkids to do the right thing, even when the right thing is hard to do. Family was extremely important to Pelelini. She loved without question, without conditions, without judgement and regardless of the circumstance. She was an amazing person with a beautiful soul. Pelelini was a special committee of ONE, a unique organization of ONE that had no official name, but she was this -- The Ultimate Wife, Mother, Grandma, Great-Grandma, Sister, Supporter, and Heartfelt Counselor! She was also a true animal lover who cherished all her pets and would even care for strays and any neighborhood animal. That is just the kind of heart she had.
