Mom (Phid) was born on May 8, 1923 in Boring, Oregon, the second child of Ernie and Cassie Amsberry, joining sister Lois and then welcoming younger brother Bob a few years later. The happy family moved to Portland where Phid graduated from Girls Polytechnic High School. After a brief early marriage which produced Robert Hayes and Leslie Hayes, Phid was introduced by her Dad to the love of her life, Bob Schreiber. They were married November 5, 1955 in Portland and 10 months later completed their family with the arrival of their daughter, Stacy.
Always the quintessential wife, mother, and hostess, Phyllis loved her family and friends. That love was evident by how many years she was “room mother,” how many outfits she sewed, sweaters she knit, meals and treats she prepared, and roses she gave away. Phyllis had the privilege of still being friends with people she met while in grade school!
Phyllis had breast cancer in 1965 and other major surgeries, never allowing any of them to slow her down. In fact, her surgeon, Dr. William Rippey, recommended her to be a visiting volunteer for recent mastectomy patients through Reach to Recovery, started by the American Cancer Society.
An avid gardener, Phyllis was proud of her gorgeous yard. Her roses, many of which were started from another rose bush, were always beautiful and rarely failed to win a prize yearly at the Portland Rose Festival Show. Her first trophy win was a highlight in her life. Although the ribbons and trophies were wonderful, what she treasured most was the great time and good laughs she had with her girls, Leslie, Elly, and Stacy, entering the rose competition.
Our mother leaves behind her legacy of love, strength of character, family, and friendship in her adoring children, Robert Hayes and his wife Elly (really mom’s third daughter!), Leslie McGrew and husband Leroy, Stacy McBride and husband Curt; grandsons, Robert Schreiber Hayes and wife Jennica, and Seth Lewallen Hayes; great grandchildren, Austin, Jayden, and Sydney Hayes.
A private service will be held at a later date.
Rest in peace, Mommy!
