Richard grew up in Bridal Veil and then, when he was seven, the family moved to Corbett. He attended Corbett High School where he was a member of the wrestling team. Richard graduated from high school in 1959 and joined the Army shortly after. While stationed in South Korea he met the love of his life, Young Hi Kim, and they were married in 1962. After his honorable discharge from the Army and returning home, Richard went to work for Nikolai Door. He later worked at Norwest Publishing (now R.R. Donnelly & Sons) as a printer, retiring in 2002.
Richard and Young Hi raised a son, Andrew, and the family enjoyed a great deal of time together. They camped and fished along the North Fork Clackamas River, fished for Salmon at Cascade Locks, and enjoyed trips to East Lake. In the early 80’s he was active in the Wyeast Mountain Men in Sandy. During retirement Richard worked hard to keep up the flower beds and gardens for Young, paying special attention to her beloved roses. He also kept busy doing projects around the house and on the property with Andy.
He was a very independent and opinionated person with a subtle sense of humor. You always knew where you stood with him. Richard had a deep pride for his country and loved children, especially his granddaughter, Jasmine.
Richard will be missed by his son, Andy of Boring; sister, Dorothy Howell of Troutdale; granddaughter, Jasmine Durall-Bowen of Ballston Spa, New York; and extended family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Young Hi in 2009; niece, Donna in 2011; and his brother, Donald in 2012.
Visitation will be held from 12 to 2 pm on Friday, March 28, immediately followed by a funeral service at 2 pm at Skyline Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest with his beloved wife at Skyline Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
