Robert graduated from the University of Virginia with a BA degree in political theory and music. While at UVA, Robert was an on-air host of a radio show at the school’s station WTJU. Robert met Jan Cafeo while they were attending graduate music school at UVA, and they were married in Charlottesville. The couple moved to Portland, Oregon in 1980. Robert earned his Master of Architecture degree from the Oregon School of Design.
Robert was a licensed architect with his own business and a dad to two children, Ben and Lizz. As a family they were always surrounded by music, art, and nature. They loved the outdoors, and a favorite destination for the family was Central Oregon.
Robert's love of music and woodworking included guitar lessons and building guitars. He liked to call himself a “guitarchitect.” Robert was well known for his quick wit and ability to make people laugh on the spot.
He is survived by Jan (his wife), Ben (son), and Lizz (daughter). Other survivors include two sisters, Liz Hayden and Laura Keistler (Gregg), and two nieces.
A private service with the family is being planned. Contributions in Robert's memory can be made to the Oregon Natural Desert Association (https://onda.org) or to a charity of your choice.
