

On June 24, 2016, Robert ‘Bob’ Martinson passed away peacefully in his sleep. Born June 10, 1919, in Portland, Bob was raised by his Swedish parents, Hannah S and Martin J Martinson along with his sister, Marjorie Ann. Bob attended Beaumont Grade School and Grant High School. He graduated from the University of Oregon after serving in the US Army, 41st Infantry, Sunset Division, during WWII, as a topographic draftsman, while stationed in the South Philippines, New Guinea, and Papuan in the Asiatic Pacific Theater, earning several medals including the Philippine Liberation Medal with one Bronze Star.
Bob married Pauline Shoen on February 21, 1959. Bob is predeceased by his wife and sister. He is survived by his step-daughters Kathryn I Sluyter and Barbara N Ward; sons-in-law Charles and Gary; second cousins Kent Fredrickson, Cheryl Van Beveren, and Bob Van Bishler among others. He was adored by his 5 grandchildren, Jesse, Justin, Jed, Brittany Sluyter and Brian Ward as well as his 3 great-grandchildren, Pierce and Beckett Ward and Tatum Sluyter.
Bob had a successful career as the advertising executive for Rosenblatt’s/Klopfenstein’s men’s clothing store in Portland. He was an active member of the Portland Ad Club and continued to be active in his University of Oregon fraternity, Phi Gamma Delta as well as being an avid Oregon Duck supporter.
Among his many interests, he will be remembered by his family and friends for his unique artistic abilities including designing and producing the logo for the Forest Park Neighborhood Association and a variety of special occasion caricature doodles, cards, and posters.
Bob’s family appreciates the loving care Bob received in his home from care givers, neighbors, and Serenity Hospice. Bob’s sense of humor will be missed by his family and friends.
A memorial service will be held on July 23, 2016 at 11:00 AM, at the First Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1816 NW Irving, Portland,OR 97209. In lieu of flowers, contributions are appreciated to the First Immanuel Lutheran Church where Bob’s maternal grandfather, John W Skans, was one of the original pastors, serving from 1883 to 1904.
