Our dear, sweet Ruby passed away unexpectedly in the early morning hours of Good Friday in Sun Valley, Idaho after a blissful day of skiing fast and enjoying the company of close friends and family.
Ruby was a bright, passionate, kind young woman. She loved studying History, serving others, the mountains and the Oregon coast. She joined Jesuit High School’s ski team her freshman year. By looking at her many Instagram posts, it is clear that she had “found her people” and a love for the wind and sun on her face. She was a “History Geek”; she watched WWII documentaries for fun and listened to history podcasts while doing the dishes. She volunteered in many capacities to organize a multi-school fundraising walk and Mass for the Children’s Cancer Association. She loved sharing her faith with others and sought any opportunity to lead retreats for fellow students.
Ruby had a big year. In addition to working on the CCA walk, she made a pilgrimage to Philadelphia to represent Jesuit Portland during Pope Francis’ visit to the city. She participated in an exchange program with students from Valencia, Spain. She earned a spot on Jesuit’s State Ski team which won second place overall in Ashland, Oregon this month. She made her Encounter, an important retreat for Jesuit Juniors. So she knew how very much she was loved and appreciated.
We admired her goofiness, her spirit and her boldness. She loved to dance in public (especially at the top of the race hill). She embraced new experiences (like the Mighty JV2 softball team) and new people whole heartedly. She made us laugh. She was unselfconscious. She was brave.
She is survived by her parents Michele and Ryan Gray, her siblings, Georgia and J.J. Gray, her grandparents, Tim and Pat Gray, Leslie and Jack McCloskey and Annette and Pepper Martin and her aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, classmates, teachers and coaches. We will all miss her dearly.
Funeral Services will be held in the Knight Gym at Jesuit High School on Monday, April 4 at 7:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations in memory of Ruby Gray to the Children’s Cancer Association, 1200 NW Naito Parkway, Suite 140, Portland, Oregon, 97209 or online via www.joyrx.org.
