Shirlene D. Hartup died peacefully on December 26, 2016, in Portland, Oregon. Born Doris Shirlene DuPree on February 16, 1928, in Coffeyville, Kansas, Shirlene was the only child of Lera and Frank DuPree. At an early age, the family moved to Chicago where she graduated from high school. Shirlene worked in Chicago’s Merchandise Mart and she loved the action of the big city, but not the cold winters. In 1953, she moved to Los Angeles, California, for the sunshine and warmer climate. While working as a secretary for Standard Oil Company of California, Shirlene met her husband of 60 years, John D. Hartup, Jr. As John accepted transfers within the company, they moved from Los Angeles to Honolulu to the San Francisco Bay area, and eventually to Portland, Oregon, with a brief interlude in Medford, Oregon. Shirlene enjoyed participating in a variety of social activities and consequently made lifelong friends everywhere she lived. In Portland, she was a Girl Scout Brownie troop leader, and active in the PTA, Garden Club, and a woman’s investment club. Shirlene was an administrative assistant at Portland’s Wilson High School in the 1980s, and afterwards she worked for nearly two decades for Muriel Walsh Estate Sales. For forty-five years she was active at First Baptist Church in downtown Portland, serving on various committees and building deep friendships with women in the church. She loved entertaining family and friends, warming up in Hawaii and Palm Desert, relaxing at Black Butte Ranch in Central Oregon, and shopping, especially at estate sales. She was always thrilled to find an unexpected treasure, and even happier to come across something that would delight a friend. Shirlene loved automobiles, and she decided the make, model, and color of every family car. An unfulfilled dream of hers was to learn to fly a private plane. Shirlene is survived by her husband John Hartup, daughters Connie Shearer of Portland and Cheryl Hartup of Eugene, grandchildren Grant, Claire, and Lily Shearer, and sons-in-law Steve Shearer and Javier Bonnin. They are blessed by her love, caring, guidance, wit, and orchestration of family celebrations. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center for the excellent care Shirlene received to facilitate a peaceful and painless death. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, January 14, 2017, 12 pm, at First Baptist Church of Portland, Oregon. For those who may wish to contribute memorials, Shirlene’s family suggests directing them to First Baptist Church (909 SW 11th Ave. Portland, OR 97205) sponsored women missionaries, or a charity of your choice.
