Silas J. Miller, 94, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2025, in Portland, Oregon. Born on April 15, 1931, in Howe, Indiana, Silas lived a long and fulfilling life marked by dedication to family, a deep appreciation for the outdoors, and an enduring passion for craftsmanship and community.
Silas was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Grace Miller. Together, they built a life rooted in love and shared values. Those who knew Silas remember him as a devoted husband and father, a man of integrity whose kindness touched everyone he met.
A lifelong enthusiast of boating, Silas had a special connection to the water. In 1965, he purchased a 17-foot Century Resorter wooden boat directly off the showroom floor—a vessel that would become both a treasured family heirloom and a symbol of his meticulous care and pride. He lovingly maintained the boat in pristine condition for decades, showcasing it at numerous boat shows throughout the Pacific Northwest. His efforts were recognized with multiple awards and accolades, including several honors for best restoration at the Lake Oswego Boat Show. The boat remains in the family today, still cherished and kept in pristine condition as a testament to his craftsmanship and enduring legacy.
Beyond his love for boating, Silas was an avid golfer who participated in many tournaments over the years. Whether on the green or among fellow enthusiasts at local clubs, he found joy in both competition and camaraderie.
Silas also had a deep-rooted love for nature and gardening. His yard was not just well-kept—it was a neighborhood showcase. Each summer brought an abundance of vegetables from his garden, cultivated with care and shared generously with friends and neighbors. His green thumb was matched only by his dedication; every flower bed and row of tomatoes reflected his tireless work ethic.
Silas lived a life rich in purpose, joy, and heart. He will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to family, his genuine kindness, and the passion he brought to everything he did. His legacy shines brightly—in the lives he touched, the traditions he began, and the example he set with quiet strength and generous spirit.
