Tom was born on December 12, 1965, in Mannheim, Germany, one of five children. As a boy, he was often up to mischief with his two closest friends, and together they traveled throughout Europe. He later spent time living in Ireland before making his permanent home in America.
At age 22, Tom moved to the United States and began working as a carpet installer. A coworker invited him to church for months before Tom finally agreed to go, and it was there that he met the love of his life, Leslie Banahan, who was singing in the choir. One of the many things that bonded them was discovering they shared the same birthday, December 12th, which they celebrated together every year.
Tom and Leslie were married on September 5th, 1992 in Colorado. After several years there, they moved to Washington, where they built a life together. Twelve years into their marriage, they welcomed their daughter, Mallory. Following Leslie’s passing, Tom and Mallory moved frequently, as Tom liked to say he was “showing Mallory the world.”
Tom worked as a truck driver for 35 years, a career that allowed him to see the country he loved. Though he spoke often about retiring and building his dream home in Montana, his journey ended before retirement.
Tom is survived by his daughter, Mallory (Hagan) Hunter, and her husband, Ethan Hunter (Utah), as well as his sisters, Ellen Oliver (Colorado) and Claudia Sgebh (Germany).
Those who knew Tom will remember his stubborn streak and sharp humor. He could drive you crazy, but you couldn’t help but love him. He wouldn’t want tears — he’d want you to raise a shot of Jägermeister and toast to him in heaven.
Tom is finally at peace, reunited with his wife in heaven.
