Virden Arthur (Scoop) Hellums passed away on February 24, 2024 at the age of 86. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Maurine (Renee), daughter, Tamara Nicholson, and son and daughter-in-law, Matthew and Kate Hellums. His grandchildren are Chad Nicholson, Maddison, Spencer, and Jackson Hellums and his great-grandchildren are Ariana and Abel Hellums. He is also survived by his sister Liz and brother-in-law Bill Burke, and brother-in-law Reid Rimensberger, who was the husband of Scoop’s sister, Marlene (Janie). Last, but not least, he will be missed by MoMo, his loving Shih tzu.
Scoop was born in Pendleton, Oregon and graduated from Pendleton High School and Blue Mountain College. He was a plumber and a plumbing estimator and throughout the years he was an entrepreneur owning three plumbing businesses. He and Renee raised their family in Happy Valley loved by all and blessed by many friends. Everyone who knew Scoop held him with the greatest respect. He loved being outside in his courtyard garden with his many flowers, vegetables, herbs, and Koi fish. In winters he enjoyed spending time in Kauai with Renee and his family. He and Renee loved their season tickets to the Oregon Symphony and plays for date night.
Wallowa County was his favorite place to camp, hunt, and fish with Matthew and his grandchildren. He took each of his grandchildren on special one-on-one Grampyadventures to any place of their imagination. He could often be found watching the Blazers and Ducks as he loved sports and played basketball in school and on town teams in Pendleton and Lewistown, Montana.
We will miss his love, humor, wit, kindness, and “Grampyisms”. Rest in peace, Scoop, and know we love you.
