Winnie was born in Portland Oregon on May 27, 1923 to Gustave & Bertha Marion Stucki. She was the third of eight children. She is survived by her brother, Ron Stucki, and sister, Bonnie White, her five children & their spouses, Terry & Caryn Peters, Becky & David Baerwald, Wendy & Grant Shirahama, Shelly & Norm Donohoe, Ron & Kathleen Peters, and seven grandchildren and spouses Nicole Peters, Ken & Krista Baerwald, Linzay & Chris Barnhart, Lacey Shirahama, Erika Donohoe, Austin Peters, Grant Peters and first great-grandson due in July.
Winnie attended Joseph Lane Grade School in SE Portland. During WWII, and for a while after, she worked for Sawyers which later became GAF View Master. She married Melvin Peters on March 23, 1946. They were together until he died one month before their 57th wedding anniversary in 2003, at which point her comment was "I thought we were going to grow old together." She was almost 80 and he was almost 82 when she made that comment.
Winnie was very artistic and musical. She enjoyed architecture, drawing, sculpting, sewing and reading. Though she never had music lessons she sang and could play piano and organ very well by ear.
Growing up during the depression she learned to use whatever she had around her to create "something out of nothing" and had the confidence to tackle any job. She helped Melvin with the design, remodeling and construction of at least five houses.
Her love for the Lord was made known based on James 1:27 “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” She loved children and proved it by assisting with the Holt International Baby Lifts after the Korean War. She was part of a team that met the children at Portland International Airport to ready them to meet their new adoptive parents. She also designed and made dozens of pre-folded diapers for the orphanage and collected clothes and toys to send to Korea. She was so pleased to call Harry, Bertha and Molly Holt her friends.
At her request, a family graveside service is planned at Willamette National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Holt International Children’s Services http://www.holtinternational.org/contactus.php.
