

Carol Jay Basham passed away February 4, 2026 at Canton United Helpers Senior Care and Rehabilitation Center. Born October 29, 1940 at Canton - Potsdam Hospital to Ruth and Bruce Jay. Carol happily grew up on the Back Hannawa Road, attended the one room schoolhouse across from the then Harley Hazelton farm. She completed her education at Potsdam Central School in 1958.
She married Donald Basham of Muldraugh, KY on July 3, 1958 at the First United Church of Hannawa Falls. The marriage ended in divorce.
Carol was predeceased by her parents, brother Phillip (Butch) Jay, and her son, Dennis Basham. Family carrying on her energy and spirit are son John (Karen) Basham, grandson Nicholas (Chelsea) Basham, and granddaughter Katherine (Jordan) Basham; great grandchildren Jay, Charlotte, and Leo.
Carol's work career included the Potsdam St. Lawrence Dairy Creamery, Canton - Potsdam Hospital, SUNY Potsdam 1968 - 1979, managing apartment complexes in Pasadena and Houston, Texas, and returning to SUNY Potsdam in the late 80's working in the public relations office, and then the registrar office until retirement. Carol was a voracious book reader, enjoyed neighbor friendships at her parent's Sterling Pond camp, loved attending Clarkson University Golden Knight hockey games at Walker Arena, local Double Axel performances, and participated in many Potsdam Kiwanis activities. She loved attending as many grandchildren events as she could.
Donations appreciated, in Carol's name, to Potsdam or Canton Rescue Squad and or Canton United Helpers Senior Care and Rehabilitation Center. Carol and her family would like to thank Canton - Potsdam Hospital and Canton United Helpers staff, especially her caregivers, the nurses and CNAs.
Arrangements are with Garner Funeral Service of Potsdam. There will be no calling hours. Spring interment planned.
