I just heard this news and am deeply saddened. My deepest condolences to Akin’s wife and children, and to his entire family and loved ones. 

When I moved to South Georgia in the 90s, Akin was one of the “senior” Alumni in the region and Dothan was in our catchment area. We had many conversations and he was always encouraging and supportive, as I navigated setting up shop in small town South Georgia.

We lost touch and then to my delight reconnected last year at the ICOMAA AGM in Chicago. We had a long conversation and he brought me up to date on all the challenges with his health. I did not know it would be the last time we would speak.

Akin was a fine gentleman, a really great smart, kind,  warm, and empathic human and physician with plenty of common sense and equanimity 

He has gone to rest from life’s travails. He will be missed by all who knew him.
May his gentle soul Rest in Peace.  Amen

Temi and the boys, Yolanda and I were terribly saddened to hear about Akin.  We know he was a great husband and father.  He was also the best neighbor we could have ever wished for.  We will always be thankful for the time he came over and resuscitated  my mother when she was in respiratory distress.  She would not have survived the night if it hadn’t been for Akin.  We also have many fond memories of him, the first time he drove a pickup truck, weeding the flower bed with just one glove, trying to figure out how to change the tire one his car, helping him shop for and new BMW and on and on.  We have missed him every day since you guys moved and we will continue to miss him now.  Temi, God bless you, Andrew and Matthew and God bless Akin.

It's amazing sometimes how someone you haven't seen for years can suddenly be everywhere you look. The past few weeks, I feel like I've seen Dr. A and Temi everywhere. It began about a month ago when I was at an auction and won a beautifully bright-colored painting of 3 jazz musicians. It immediately made me think "Dr. A would love this."  Who knows why. Maybe because it was jazz. Maybe because it's colorful, playful style reminded me of some of Temi's beautiful work. But for some reason, he came to mind immediately. Later on throughout the past weeks, I've thought I saw Temi in a crowd somewhere and in another place, swore I heard Dr. A's  signature, hearty laugh. Never did I think that you both were being put on my heart because of this. Never. 
There is a hole now, a giant void, left where Akin Ayodeji once stood. He was such a huge presence with an absolutely beautiful soul. There were days when one who knew him could tell he was frustrated or tired, but his smile would remain. A smile that always reached his eyes. He spread happiness wherever he was. 
I've known, and worked with, many doctors. Not one was loved by his patients as much as he was. 
Temi, I wish there was something I could say to you and your boys that would help soothe the pain. I know that no amount of "I'm sorry" will help, and for that, I truly am...sorry. But I can tell by reading all of these stories that he will absolutely live on forever in so many memories and hearts. As long as we remember his huge laugh, his gentle soul, and most of all his giant love for his family, friends, and patients, he will never be truly gone. He's just out of reach for now, and you will see him again.

What a great privilege and honour to be able to call Akin or rather as l always called him “ Gbabe” a friend, colleague, my first Sons Godfather. We last spoke at great length last month few days after our birthdays . I never thought that was going to be our last conversation. 
Akin was a great family man, husband and father and my heart goes out to his lovely, caring wife Tope and their Sons at this difficult time. 
If you’re looking for a humble, trustworthy, reliable friend then Gbabe was your guy. Can’t believe l am using past tense to describe Akin. A happy camper, never a dull moment when around Akin. He Brightened up a room with his infectious laughter and smile.
Akin and Tope thank you for showing up big time to all our functions especially Akins Godson wedding ceremony and Akin for giving a great speech during the reception.
Akin did a big favour that l will forever be grateful for, on New Year’s Day 1990, to show how caring and generous Akin was he showed up big time for me and my wife when things were really rough. What a great friend. 
I will end by thanking Almighty for his life, sending Tope to be his wife and blessing their union with two Boys. I pray for divine guidance and protection at this difficult moment for Akins family and friends. Continue to rest in peace my brother. God knows best we can not question his ways but give thanks always.

Akin was a very very good friend . I fondly called him my man . When I had my first son it was a no brainer, Akin had to be one of his Godfathers and he always ended our conversations on the phone with “how is my Godson doing” and he showed up proudly for his wedding to support him. Next to my husband Akin was the best friend anyone could hope for. He had a wicked sense of humour and a distinct laughter which was contagious. Akin was one of my husband’s dear friends and my husband soon realized early enough that he had better not get into the middle of our conversationsSeveral times he will get home and see me talking and laughing my head off and he often thought it was one of my girlfriends only to find out it was Akin, that’s the kind of friend he was. He did not see me as one of his friend’s wife , he saw me also as his friend. There was no occasion I celebrated that Akin and Tope did not show up for. Akin was one of those people you wanted around you when there is something to celebrate and he always tried to show up for his friends because that’s the kind of guy he was. Never a dull moment around him. He knew how to celebrate life . He encouraged my passion for smooth Jazz, and I tell you  he knew all those artists by name and the instruments they played. My husband and I were so glad to have known this wonderful guy. Akin will remain close to my heart. Rest In perfect peace Akin, knowing your work on this earth is done.

Dr A was my doc when he was in Dothan, Al. He was one of a kind gem. Made me smile every time I saw him.  His sweet spirit and humor and zest for life were truly undeniable.  My heart is so broken at this news. Praying for his family. He was a great man.! 🩷

Losing a loved one is an incredibly  difficult  experience, and when it's someone as special as a cousin, the pain can feel even more profound. The void left by his absence is deeply felt, and the memories of the time spent together become all the more precious. 

We grew up  in Ondo  town in Ondo state where we both hailed and sharing  the same love together as my first cousin.

We had our  secondary education in Ondo  while he proceeded to Ibadan  for his university education. 

We both came together again in the United States and our bond became stronger. He was in Alabama  while i was in California  and we both visited each other occasionally. 

I was the best man at his wedding. And in early  2025, I moved back to Nigeria  and he promised to visit me during his next trip to Nigeria not knowing  fully that God has His own plans.

We did communicate from time to time not untill  the 10th of May 2026 when the sad news got to me about his death. It came to me as a shock.

God knows best and who are we to blame God.

Oh my Dr A for 30+ years was my favorite and I always told him I was his favorite….he brought me through one of the worse times in my life…so good at what he knew and so patient and kind…but we also shared so many laughs!! .I have shed a few tears over this but that big smile and laughter of his is brighter than ever before!  I’ll see you again Dr A on the streets of gold…sending my love and prayers to Temi and those precious sons!

My prayers go out to  the family of Dr. A.  He was my doctor while he was in Montgomery.  Always smiling and happy.  He got the biggest laugh one day when he saw that I had lost a few pounds and I said "ole ye of little faith".  He thought that was the funniest thing.  Not to worry, it all came back.  We talked of how he wanted to stop working so much and was the reason he would no longer be my doctor unless I traveled to his new office.  He was kind, respectful and a great listener to all my aches and pains.  Thank you Dr. A and may you be flying with the angels.

We called him "Gbabee"—a moniker earned from his favorite phrase. Depending on the context, Gbabee meant "accept it," "believe it," or simply "it is what it is." But more than just a phrase, it defined who Akin was: a man who gracefully played the hand he was dealt. Though he battled sickle cell disease his entire life, you would never have guessed it from his radiant, joyful demeanor. He was always quick to burst into a booming laugh that invariably started with a quiet chuckle. That was Akin—a happy soldier, a consummate gentleman, a brilliant conversationalist, a fantastic physician, and an incredibly well-informed soul.

Akin, your departure caught us off guard. But just as you always taught us: aa gbabee aa gbafOlorun (We accept it, and we leave it to God).
Rest in peace my brother.

I just found out about the passing of Dr. A as we lovingly called him.  My husband and I started seeing him in Dothan, many years ago, then Montgomery  and were currently seeing him in Colquett Georgia . I had to call His office this morning and was told he had passed.  I am completely heartbroken. We loved him so much. He always entered the room with a big smile, hand shake, and hug. He truly cared for us and all his patients.  Please know that we are praying the strength, peace and comfort that can only come from our Heavenly Father over you his family.

Akin's departure has been a very deep loss of an honest to goodness model human being,  a gentleman. "Aken" as I called him, in a very Ondo intonation, was kind, very generous giving so much of himself and treasure.  He was witty, had jokes, brilliant, unassuming, resilient, funny, had a name for everyone, humble, had the best warm and echoing laugh - signature Akin. We never saw him angry. So many attributes to remember, all good.
After medical school, we did not see Akin until our first class reunion in Atlanta and it was there we first met Tope. We knew that she was God's choice for our brother. They just clicked. Andrew was a baby then.
At our 40th reunion in Nigeria last year, you gave a great speech in your all americanized english. I teased you afterwards about the gonna gonnas. We all laughed so hard and so did you. What a time we had.
Tope, we thank God for you and we thank you for your unconditional love and care of our brother.  You were indeed part of each other.  A deep love that was all so encompassing, tireless and giving. Our gratitude knows no bounds, Tope. The good Lord will comfort, strengthen and lift you up. He will bless you and your children.
Aken, you left us too soon but who are we to question God?  Your departure has left a vacuum difficult to fill. You had names for us too, Foley Baba and Yeeetii. So sorry for this untimely and tragic death. I will always remember, Akin’s kindness, warmth, compassion, and gentle ways, as well as his wonderful smile. I don’t think I ever saw him upset or angry over anything. Rest in peace, dear friend!

I’m still struggling with the news that Akino is no longer with us. I think back to our years together in medical school in Ibadan, Nigeria, and working as doctors in the United Kingdom , and remember with fondness Akino’s infectious good humour and raucous laughter. Our contact became more sporadic after he moved to the United States, but we did keep in contact, and I remember seeing him in the photographs last year of the 40th graduation anniversary reunion of the Ibadan Medical School Class of 1985.
My deepest condolences to his family and friends - may his kind and gentle soul rest in eternal peace. Amen 🙏🏾

To the Memory of a gentle soul, gone so soon. Dr Ayodeji was a very gentle man, soft spoken, humble, and very respectful. 
As someone who God gave the privilege of planning Dr and Mrs Ayodeji's wedding. Few years ago. I thank God that he himself chose for him.
God gave Dr. Ayodeji his own bone and flesh.  God complited Dr Ayodeji's rib bones by matching him with an angel. 
Mrs Ayodeji, I raise my hat to salute you for abiding by the will of God. For your care, support, and prayers throughout your husband's life with him. I am sure your husband passing away on mother's day  was a sign from God.
Our prayers is that God almighty shall continue to bless you, grant you and your children long life with good health.  and provide for all your needs according to his riches and glory. We love you and please let your children know that we love them and we are praying for them.

For some dreams die but for you, you just live your dream and it seem you exited while doing just that, and as Tope explicitly explained it, ‘it seems you just stepped out to check the other side….’ 

Akin my in-law, the first thing that struck me was the chuckle and laughter mixed together in pidgin and that’s how it’s been for the last 40years or more. 

Dr, it’s sad that you’re gone in the physical, that means I have to work harder, wittier, and have solutions to all matters concerning your nieces.  Your support at all times is unquantifiable, indispensable as well, a ti de oju olomo o to bayi o. Ișę ti bęrę.😁🤷🏽

Uncle Akin, rather than quarrel, you keep to yourself and keep your door open. I don’t think you have time to keep malice.

On behalf of the Executive Board and the entire membership of the Ibadan Medical Specialists Group, United Kingdom, I write to express our deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues on the sudden loss of Dr Akinola O Ayodeji. “Akino” as he was fondly referred to by his friends, was in his time in the UK in the 1990s one of the seven founding members of our charitable organisation. 

The vision Akin and his colleagues had back then has grown into a thriving 32-year legacy of impactful contributions to the development and support of undergraduate medical education and research at the College of Medicine University of Ibadan. That vision is now a leading light that alumni organisations in Nigeria follow.

Akin later moved to the USA and forged a successful professional medical career in his chosen specialty of Endocrinology ( at one point, his email address was “Glandman@…”) but continued with his involvement through various groups  to be a thoughtful and generous alumnus. His
legacy of commitment to giving back to the Alma Mater will continue to inspire generations to come.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, especially his wife, and all loved ones at this difficult time. He will forever remain in our thoughts.

Akino, as we popularly call you or Akinococus to be exact. You have left a big hole in all our hearts. You were without doubt one of the most incredible person that I have ever met with no negative bone in your body. I always enjoyed meeting or calling you just to be greeted by your common phrase 'I hail you na' followed by that incredible infectious and joyful laughter. I have known you for over 40yrs and never once found you expressing any negative words. Indeed you faced life with so much positivity you were an inspiration to us all. The only times I have witnessed anger in your voice is when you argued passionately against injustice to others. Akin, you were such an incredible person and I and my family were lucky to have met you in our lives journey. We all love you but God loves you more. Adieu, my friend continue to rest in perfect peace free from all labours and pains,  Amen

The news of Dr. Ayodeji’s passing has been truly shocking, heartbreaking, and deeply saddening. It is difficult to find the right words for such a tremendous loss.

One of the things I will always remember about him was his willingness to help others with kindness, wisdom, and generosity.

Several years ago, when my daughter was seeking opportunities to shadow physicians as part of her academic journey, Temi and Dr. Ayodeji graciously connected us with doctors in Atlanta who could help guide and encourage her. Their willingness to open doors and support a young student meant a great deal to our family.

More recently, about two years ago, a friend and colleague of mine in Ghana became seriously ill and needed urgent medical care in the United States.  I reached out to Temi, and together they both stepped in to help. Dr. Ayodeji generously shared his medical insight, advised us on the best hospital options, and explained the process with patience and care. During a very stressful time, their guidance brought clarity and comfort, and I remain deeply grateful.

Beyond his accomplishments as a physician, he built a beautiful life with Temi and their two wonderful sons. Seeing my friend happy, loved, and supported over the years was another reflection of the kind of man he was.

My heart goes out to Temi, their sons, family, friends, colleagues, and the many lives he touched. May his memory continue to live on through them all.

Akin had a life anyone would be proud of - respected in his profession, loved and adored by his family and long-time patients - and yet, he never acted prideful or arrogant. Instead, he was quietly steadfast in his dedication to his career and his family. This honorable man welcomed me with kindness and generosity when I visited them in his home and I will  miss his beautiful smile and sense of humor,  always willing to take a moment to connect with me if I was on the phone with Temi, and I especially admired the way he loved his family by providing a great life for them. 💖 My deepest condolences go out to Temi, Andrew, and Matthew. Your father/ husband was a great man and I hope your many wonderful memories will carry you through this difficult time of loss and heartbreak. 🌿🙏

I am so very sorry to learn of Dr Ayodeji passing.  I have made referrals to him for the pass 30 years and have only ever heard of what a good doctor he is.  Our patients went from Dothan to Montgomery and then to Colquit to see only him.  May God rest your soul Dr Ayodeji,  you will surely be missed.

Little did I know that our last gathering in Ibadan last year, the town where we first met 46 years ago would be our last. 

Your loud infectious laughters will be missed forever. That deep unique baritone voice is forever gone. 

I reflected on our association from Kuti Hall to ABH  , UK and in North America and could still not believe you are gone forever.
 Despite all the challenges, you always remained positive.

A-K-I-N-U-L-A, GBABE !  is gone!!!!! What a rude awakening!! This is a very very sad news.
Akin was one of the greatest and best friend of Class 85. He related and connected well with everyone in the group regardless of your tribe or religion. 
I will always remember the physical Xmas cards that he religiously sent to my family on a yearly basis for 28 years or more. His visits to my house in Toronto will always be cherished.
Akin, little did I know that the dance we had at 40 years reunion in Ibadan was going to be our last dance.
Akin, you are gone from our sight but not from our hearts. It was a privilege to have had you as a genuine and loving friend.

With a warm, gentle heart, always wide.
Using the past tense feels heavy today,
For Uncle was kindness, love, and pure fate in every way.

With humor shining in his eyes,
He brought peace to the weary, a comforting guise.
Uncle was full of laughter and grace,
In his presence, Auntie, we found our safe space.

You often told me, “Your uncle is a good man,”
A truth so clear, as only he could.
Intentional love, his words softly spoken,
In his gentle embrace, our worries were broken.

Last year, we hoped for Disney, excitement that could have bloomed,
I imagined the joy that would fill every room.
Yet surgery called, and plans changed course,
But Uncle reached out with love I still endorse.

My heartfelt sadness to his wife and sons.  I have known Dr A for at least 20 years as my physician, and within the past few years he came to work for me at Miller County Hospital.   Before leaving Dothan to practice in Alabama I tried to recruit him to help us out in Georgia, I was unsuccessful - but a few years ago he reached out to me laughing that contagious roaring laugh we all loved and said “it took you a few years but I am willing to discuss your offer”.
He was loved by the entire Miller family, he impacted so many lives in such a positive way.  Few of us will leave such a mark on this planet.  May God bless his family.

My dear Temi and Matthew and Andrew,  I dont know where to begin. I have so many great memories with Dr. A mainly funny memories. I will share them with yall when we talk. The list goes on and on. Dr. A was not only my boss for almost 20 years but my friend! One of my best friends.  Dr. A is the reason I have such a passion for Endocrinology. He was a excellent teacher. Im so thankful God blessed me with a phone call from Dr. A  a couple weeks ago. We got to catch up on our our patients we loved and both agreed we were a awesome team together.  Some of the things that stick out in my mind about Dr A are a couple things I know he loved the most. His love for a BMW , his hot tea I would make sure he had every morning and his love for jazz. He loved Temi , Matthew and Andrew with all his heart. He loved watching tennis and soccer. He cared so deeply for everyone especially his patients. I will miss you until I see you again Dr. A.!! Dear Dr Ayodeji family,

I was so saddened to hear of his death. He was the most precious person and the best physician I had ever known.  He was very wise and caring. I will miss him terribly and I know you will miss him more .
