Montgomery – Alfred Joseph Perez, age 87, passed away on January 20th, 2018, at home with his family. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dolores Adams Perez; daughters Susan Goodwin (Steve), Patricia Balius (David), and Cheryl Perez; grandchildren Jessica Bullard (Joey), Jeannine Seely (James), Elizabeth Eiland (Lance), Rebecca Goodwin-Seale (Mettie), Scott Achtemeier (Martha); great-grandchildren Alaina Plaster, Hannah Seely, Zoe Bullard, Sarah Achtemeier, Anna Claire Eiland, and Andrew Alexander Achtemeier; sister Maria Julia Perez Martin; many cousins, nieces, and nephews; and lifelong friends Barclay Burke and Dick Drane.
Alfred was born in New York City, raised in Jamaica, West Indies, and returned to the United States to join the U. S. Air Force. He was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany, in the 1st Radio Relay Squadron as part of the Army of Occupation. While there, he met and married Dolores Adams, who was a secretary with the Foreign Service. Along the way, Alfred had many different jobs: a tallyman for a banana plantation near Kingston, Jamaica (just like the song); bookkeeper at Bells Radio Service in Jamaica; shoe salesman; Golden Flake Potato Chip truck driver (his children’s favorite); photographer. He settled in to a career as a computer specialist with the United States Department of Defense where he and his family traveled the globe using his skills for the betterment of our country. After retirement, he worked with Sievers Accounting firm in Wetumpka, Alabama, and served on the MAX Credit Union Board of Directors.
Mr. Alfred Perez had a most amazing and wonderful life. He taught his children to always attend church and to make God the most important thing in their lives. He showed them the wonders of traveling to other places to expand their minds. He wanted them to always experience all the finer things in life: music, museums, opera, parks, plays, parades, other cultures, the great world that the good Lord gave us. Most importantly, he showed them the importance of family—not just immediate family, but, the whole extended family, blood related or not. For over 65 years, he showed us how much he loved his wife. He may not have said it all the time, but, you could feel it every day. We are all better having known him.
