George was born in Autaugaville, Alabama on June 8, 1945 to his parents, George Cogdill Sheridan and Maggie Speed Sheridan, who endearingly called him “baby” because he was the baby of the family. George and his brothers and sisters enjoyed watching sports as children and throughout adulthood. He played football, baseball, and basketball while attending Hicks Memorial school. He was a superb baseball player and even earned a scholarship to college. After graduating high school, he worked, married his high school sweetheart, and joined the Army National Guard where he served from 1966-1972. Then, he served as an officer for the Montgomery Police Department for several years in the 1970s. After that, he was the parts manager at Sheridan Auto Supply. Then, he owned a successful auto parts business, George Sheridan Automotive, Inc. from 1983 to 1992. After retiring in 1992, he traded stocks and played golf full time.
George was an avid golfer. He was previously a member of Burnt Pine Golf Club at Sandestin in Miramar Beach, Florida for many years where he won numerous golf tournaments. He was a current member of the Prattville Country Club (PCC) where he was devoted to playing golf, working out, and spending time with other members. He enjoyed playing in and winning golf tournaments at PCC, as well. In addition, he served as Manager of PCC a couple of years and served as President of the Board of Directors for several terms. He had many close friends at both clubs and enjoyed playing golf with them. In recent years, he enjoyed helping his son and daughter-in-law with the Sunflower Field each summer. He enjoyed watching sunsets with his daughter and going to the beach in St. George Island and Fort Morgan with his wife and family. He also enjoyed Face Timing with his out-of-town grandchildren, Georgia, Todd Jr., and Scott Michael to hear about their days. He enjoyed playing golf with his grandson Cass and his “adopted” grandsons, Hunter and Tanner Dismukes. His favorite pastime at home was watching golf, cutting grass and playing with and holding his sweet poodle, Nicky (which he would never admit)! Most of all, he loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them.
George celebrated his 80th birthday on June 8, 2025, with an overwhelming affection of love from his immediate and extended family as they rallied together at his home to celebrate him. Many memories were shared, and stories were retold about building his home, family Christmases, July 4th celebrations, family vacations at Bridge Creek Clubhouse, football gatherings, fishing trips, his automotive store, Saint George Island beach trips, Fort Morgan beach trips, and his most beloved sport, golfing.
Pallbearers are Cass Sheridan, Todd Sheridan, Jr., Scott Michael Russell, Hunter Dismukes, Tanner Dismukes, and Mike Crumpton.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the Montgomery Cancer Center for their devotion and care and also the nurses at Gentiva Hospice for their loving care. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the Autaugaville Baptist Church, P. O. Box 35, Autaugaville, AL 36003.
