Lieutenant Jon Dunklin Herbert, 62, a resident of Autauga County, AL passed away 24th of January 2021 at his home. Jon was a public servant for the last 40 years, and most recently worked as a Lieutenant and Commander of the Reserve Unit for Autauga County Sheriff’s Department. His life was dedicated to serving others since early in his youth when he joined and graduated from the Lyman Ward Military Academy. After this he embarked on a long and enduring career as a Police Officer, Deputy and fire fighter at multiple departments to include Autauga County, Barbour County, Chambers County, Lee County, Pike County and Union County. If that wasn’t enough, he also dedicated his life to his passion of K-9 dog handler where he trained and partnered with commissioned K-9 Officers, notably Enno, Eiko, and Nikko, who Jon accredited with saving his life on multiple occasions while in the line of duty. His greatest passion in life was serving his family and officers around him as a mentor and father figure to so many. Additionally, Jon loved Auburn football and horses to his last days, and showed this by escorting hundreds of Auburn football players, coaches, and even being a PCA rodeo judge. So many events in his life were memorable, but for him, his greatest joy was his children and grandchildren, and in his own words, “sittin in the patrol car”.
Jon was preceded in death by his parents, Audrey and Earl Herbert Sr. He is survived by his wife Shari Herbert; three brothers; Joe Herbert, Jim Herbert and Jack Herbert; his three children and their spouses; Kami Henson, Miles & Grace Herbert and Jessica & Chris Colley; his eight grandchildren, Lane Riley, Makayla Riley, Dylan Ray, Lance Redolosa, Karla Redolosa, Cassey Redolosa, Eliza Herbert and Isabella Herbert; and one great grandchild, Rylan Jackson.
If we could ask him advice for all of us in mourning, he would definitely say, “Cowboy up!”
