Date of Birth: January 14, 1972 Left for Heaven on Friday, December 27, 2024 at age 52, while in the care of University Hospital Northern BC (UHNBC) in Prince George, British Columbia.
Percy was born in Victoria, BC, a place that held a special place in his heart all his life. His mom, Verna (Anderson) and his dad, Percy Sr. along with big sister, Lana (Pflanz) lived in Sooke, BC at the time. The night he decided to enter the world he came in a big hurry. The midnight taxi ride to Victoria General Hospital was guided by a police car with lights and siren blasting the quiet night air. At 12:05am he loudly announced to the world that he was ready for life. The parents had predetermined his first and second name, but when his dad saw him for the first time, he proclaimed him “Percy Richard Jr” His uncles and aunts decided he should be nicknamed “Little Percy,” which stuck with many family members the rest of his life, much to his embarrassment, especially as a man who stood 6 ft tall!
Growing up in Victoria was so much fun. There were so many uncles, aunts, and numerous cousins that came together every weekend for meals and play time. As a little boy his favorite thing to do was to pretend to be superman, running about the house and jumping off furniture with a tea towel tied to his neck as a cape. One year, around age 5, he jumped off the monkey bars and broke his arm; that was an Ah-ha moment that maybe his cape did not work so well!
At age 13, Percy, Lana and his mom moved to Prince George. He attended Kelly Rd. Secondary and graduated from PGSS in 1992. All during his pre & teen years Percy loved to play sports. Anything where a ball and a puck were involved is where he spent his time. If not on the ice, or on a field, he would be watching sports on TV. Sports was the love of his life until he met Tereza Cirko when she was 16 and he was 18 years old. Then his world changed to revolve around Tereza, who would become his life partner. They were married at a beautiful ceremony on the Island of Maui in 2004. Soon after came his first daughter Sophie Gail (2006) and Abby Helena (2008). His “three girls” and his home life fulfilled him. Molson, Oscar, and Nola, were boxers that got added to the mix - he loved those dogs! Percy’s world was complete.
As a young man he started working in the belting industry, travelling around BC to complete maintenance jobs in the mills. He changed careers just before Sophie was born and started work at the Canfor Northwood Pulp mill, where he stayed for 17 years, proudly obtaining his Millwright certification.
Tereza’s family surrounded the couple and their children with love and support all their married life. The children’s grandmother, Angie, who is affectionately referred to as “Baba” provided nurturing and unconditional love that is reflected in all aspects of their lives. Tereza’s dad Duke, Ante (brother) & Summer; John & Dina (sister); Troy & Lucy (sister) and all the children filled the Johnson’s lives with love, laughter, and years of summer fun at the lake!
On December 27th, (his mom & dad’s wedding anniversary date) Percy passed away quietly while in the hospital. Left behind with beautiful memories to cherish are Percy’s devoted and loving wife, Tereza and two adoring daughters, Sophie and Abby; his mother, Verna and stepfather James Blinn; sister, Lana Pflanz (Dave) and nieces Caitlin and Caley.
Percy is predeceased by his father Percy Sr who lived in Victoria, BC as well as his grandparents on both sides of the family. Glenna & Neil Washburn of Flin Flon, Manitoba. Ella Anderson & Fred Isbister of Williams Lake. Special mention to his first cousins who made all those precious childhood and
adulthood memories with him. Richard, Terry, Shelly, Christine Anderson; Travis, Mike, Tasha Anderson; Glenda, Audra, Linda Peterson; Kelly, (Wanda & Tracy now deceased) Ahdemar. Carmen Johnson. Scott & Lee Honeyman.
At this time the family has chosen to honor his memory privately with a celebration of life to be held at a later date. You may post your fond memories on this F/B link of Assman’s Funeral Home.
The family wishes to say thank you to the Prince George staff at the BC Cancer Clinic and UHNBC’s ICU and HAU for their compassionate care of Percy.
