

A Memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 20, 2011 at Prineville Funeral Home at 2:00p.m.
Nick was born in Newberg, Oregon on May 23, 1989. On December 5, 1994 he moved to Spray and attended kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade there. Then he moved to Blue River, Oregon in 1997 and attended McKenzie River elementary from 3rd to 5th grade. Then he moved to Prineville and attended Cecil Sly elementary, Crook County Middle School, and graduated from Crook County High School in 2008. Nicholas graduated from Oregon Youth College Program of Bend graduating in December of 2007. While in High School Nick also received a commendation from a soldier in the U. S. Army in Iraq for bravery for his effort in helping to try to save a friend who drowned in Prineville Reservoir.
Nick owned & operated Hammell’s Lawn & Landscape/Maintenance in Bend and also worked as a delivery driver.
He attended New Life Bible Chapel in Prineville.
Nick was an avid snow boarder at Mt. Batchelor & Timberline Lodge. In High School he played football for CCHS as a linebacker and also wrestled for CCHS, die-hard Beaver fan, and loved going to Corvallis for the games. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, camping and hunting, especially big game. His absolute passion was his family; son & brothers; he taught them courage & strength. He loved socializing with family & friends. Nick was well known as a great cook, and just learned to make pumpkin pie from scratch from his grandmother. He was not afraid of a challenge or learning new things.
Nick enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp while still in High School. He graduated from boot camp in San Diego, California at 10AM and graduated from CCHS at 5pm on the same day; making it to both ceremonies. He came home on leave from Marines and he and his grandfather were baptized on Father’s Day June 15, 2008.
His hero’s were his father, his step-mother, his son; Isaak, and his cousin Tyler Smyres.
Nick is survived by his father; Harvey Ray Hammell of Milwaukie, Oregon, and birth mother; Denise Dempsher of New Jersey. Fiancé; Marissa Kelly of Bend, Son; Isaak Hammell of Bend, Step-Mother; Mystie Grover & her husband Jeremy of Prineville. Best friend & brother; Colby Hammell, step-brothers; Kyler Grover and Hayden Grover all of Prineville. Step-sister; Soonhi Dempsher of New Jersey, and grandparents’s; Jean Hammell of Spray, Oregon, Ellen Geissel of Spray, Oregon and Soonhi McCauley of New Jersey, Michael McCauley of Colorado. Aunts & Uncles: Michael Lynn Dickens of Hermiston, Oregon, Carol Sue & her husband Tom Kaab of Gaston, Oregon, John William & his wife Shawna Hammell of Duchene, Utah, Patrick Allen & his wife Angie Hammell of Gaston, Oregon, & Gregory Scott Hammell of Spray, Oregon. And his dog; Charlie, a Border Collie & Blue Healer mix.
He was preceded in death by grandfather, one cousin; Tyler Smyres (1-21-2003).
