

NORTH PROVIDENCE - BARRETT, Chief Richard M., 70, of West River Pkwy., died Saturday at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center. Born in Providence, a son of the late William and Kathleen (Geary) Barrett, he had lived in Providence for most of his life prior to moving to North Providence 18 years ago. Chief Barrett had been a Battalion Chief for the Providence Fire Department. He was appointed to the Department in 1962, and assigned to Rescue 3. He was promoted to Lieutenant-Rescue 3 on April 25, 1971, to Captain-Rescue 3 on November 5, 1981, and to Battalion Chief of the Emergency Division on June 13, 1986. He retired on October 28, 1988 after 26 years of service. He had been an instructor at the Providence Fire Academy, and also had taught EMS at CCRI. He was a member of the Providence Firefighters Union-Local 799, Providence Permanent Fireman's Relief Association, and the Retired Providence Police & Firefighter Association. He was a US Army Veteran. He was a 1951 graduate of Blessed Sacrament School, and a 1954 graduate of LaSalle Academy. He had been a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church since childhood, and had served the church as an altar boy. He was currently a communicant of St. Augustine Church. He was an avid Notre Dame fan, and was a "Subway Alumni" of Notre Dame. His sister Mary Ann Barrett of North Providence and his brother William F. Barrett of Norwood, MA survive him. He also leaves behind his beloved dogs, Rockne and Shadow. Another beloved dog, Gipper, had pre-deceased him. His funeral will be Tuesday at 8:45am from the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith Street, Providence. Mass of Christian Burial at 10am in St. Augustine Church, Mt. Pleasant Avenue, Providence. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, West Warwick. Visitation Monday 4-8pm. In lieu of flowers donations to Philip Hulitar Hospice Center, 50 Maude Street, Providence, RI 02908 in his memory will be appreciated.
