

George A. Gomes, 90, of Oregon Street, passed away on Thursday, March 29, 2012 at the Elmhurst Extended Care Facility, in Providence. He was the husband of the late Adeline E. (Monteiro) Gomes.Born in Lincoln, he was the son of the late Augusto P., and Eugenia (Pina) Gomes.Mr. Gomes served his country proudly during World War II with the United States Army. He was also employed as a merchant seaman for many years. After serving his country he worked at various restaurants in the Providence area as a sous chef.George was known by his family and friends as "Mr. Fix It". He took pride in grooming and maintaining his property, and enjoyed building and fixing things around his house. He was very patriotic, and was a kind and gentle person, who will be missed by all who knew him.He is survived by his three children, David Gomes, of TX, Donna Gomes, and Cynthia Gomes, both of Providence. He was the brother of the late Louis and Antonio Gomes, and Beatriz Gomes Lomba.His funeral with visitation will be held on Tuesday, at 9:00 am, in the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith Street, Providence, with a funeral service at 10:00 am. Interment with military honors will follow in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter.
