

James R. “Jim” Engel, age 62, passed away Monday, May 24, 2021 at his home in Pawtucket. Born in Long Branch, NJ the son of the late Dr. Herbert W. and Barbara (Stein) Engel Swartzberg he was a resident of Oakhurst, New Jersey before relocating to High Point, North Carolina and eventually settling in Rhode Island.
Jim attended Brookdale Community College and earned a certification in food service. A dedicated employee, he worked for the Alcohol Beverage Control of North Carolina in High Point for 23 years and worked in Brown University’s dining services for 9 years. A New England Sports enthusiast he also enjoyed traveling with his family to Cancun and Punta Cana and spending his summers in Narragansett. He adored taking care of his sister and brother-in-law’s dog, Max, but especially the time he spent with his nieces and nephews.
Jim is survived by one brother, Peter Engel and his wife Helen of Livingston, NJ and Arlington Vermont; one sister, Cathy Oresman and her husband Bob of Pawtucket, RI and nieces and nephews, Harris Engel, Morgan Engel, Daniel Oresman and David Oresman and his fiancée Abby Ricci. He was the stepson of the late Fred Swartzberg.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 27th at 11:00am in the Sugarman-Sinai Memorial Chapel, 458 Hope St, Providence, RI. Shiva will be held at the home of Cathy Oresman, 16 Kenilworth Way, Pawtucket, RI immediately following services and Thursday May 27th, 6:30pm-8:30pm.
