Janet Elizabeth Gunzelman, age 81, died peacefully surrounded by loving family at HopeHealth Hospice on May 31, 2024, nine days after suffering injuries from a fall at her Providence home. The daughter of the late John G. and Belle (Lindblom) Gunzelman, she was born in Orange, New Jersey on April 12, 1943 and raised in nearby Bloomfield. In her 20s, she moved to Rhode Island and spent the remainder of her life in the greater Providence area. In her last years, she was an active member of the Cranston DayCare community, where she will be greatly missed.
She was very clever with her hands, creating everything from intricate knitting and crocheting projects to elaborate Christmas cookies. Her whatever-you-want-I’ll-make-it birthday cakes were treasured by two generations of nieces and nephews. An avid animal lover, she shared her home with many feline and canine companions throughout her life. She also had a patient and loving heart as evidenced by her years as a registered dietician and end-of-life caregiver for several close family members.
Janet was predeceased by Charles Herbert Gay, her long-time companion. She leaves behind her brother John T. Gunzelman and his wife Janice of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, five nieces and two nephews, and seven grand-nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service was held on Saturday, June 29, 2024 at 11:00 AM at the United Congregational Church, 524 Valley Rd, Middletown, Rhode Island, 02842.
