John J. McGovern

Narragansett: McGovern, John J., "BIG JOHN", age 84, passed away on Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at Kent Hospital. He was the loving husband of the late Marilyn G.(Downey) McGovern.Born in Providence, he was the son of the late John and Helen (Dalton) McGovern. John was a retired Lieutenant for the Providence Police Department, serving 22 years. He was a member of the Providence FOP Lodge # 3. He was a communicant of St. Mary, Star of the Sea Church in Narragansett and a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick in Narragansett.John served with the Merchant Marines in World War II in the Mediterranean, Pacific and Atlantic Theatre.He is survived by his beloved companion, Jean A. O'Neill of South Kingstown, and his children, James M. McGovern of Cranston, Linda McGovern Cohen of North Kingstown, Mark J. McGovern of Richmond, Dennis J. McGovern of Texas and John M. McGovern of Narragansett, a brother, E.Francis McGovern of Narragansett, nine grandchildren and a great granddaughter. He was the brother of the late Mary Geary.His funeral will be held on Tuesday at 8:15 am from the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 142 Centerville Rd, Warwick. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am in St. Mary, Star of the Sea Church, Point Judith Road, Narragansett.
