MARGUERITE KATHERINE (MCCRUDDEN) MCKAY passed away on May 10, 2015, Mothers Day, in Reston, Virginia. She was 96. Marguerite was born on September 15, 1918 and grew up in Providence, Rhode Island. She was the eldest of six children born to Bernard and Margaret (Daly) McCrudden. She was a parishioner of St. Patrick's Church on Smith Hill in Providence, graduated St. Patrick's High School, and then earned her baccalaureate degree from Bryant University in 1938. Over the course of her career, Marguerite worked for the City of Providence for most of her professional life, beginning in the Building Inspector's office in City Hall, and eventually working until retirement in the Providence School Department. She married Franklin Richard McKay, an attorney, city councilman and later city solicitor of Attleboro, Massachusetts, on May 5, 1950, and moved to Attleboro, where she was active in community, politics, and St. John the Evangelist parish, school and scouting, while spending every summer in Barrington, Rhode Island. Marguerite and Franklin had one child, Bernard Francis McKay, born on January 16, 1952. She has many surviving relatives and friends who will sorely miss her, including her son Bernard and his wife, Mary of McLean, Virginia; three devoted grandchildren, Patrick, Conor and Rosemary McKay, three great grandchildren, Aria, Jayden and Joan McKay, and two surviving beloved siblings, Cornelius Bernard McCrudden of Old Saybrook, Connecticut, and Mary McCrudden Broome of South Kingstown, Rhode Island. One of Marguerite's grandchildren, Brendan McKay, predeceased her, passing away in Rome, Italy in September 2014. Marguerite moved back to Rhode Island in 1969 following the untimely death of her husband Frank in 1968, and lived in her homes in Barrington and Prudence Island for the next four decades until moving to Virginia to be nearer to family in 2005. An avid cook, gardener, swimmer, and political observer, she traveled extensively in retirement, visiting Florida frequently, and touring throughout Ireland and Italy. She was a faithful communicant of St. Luke's Church in Barrington. Funeral and visitation will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2015 at 8:15 am from the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith Street, Providence. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am in Saint Patrick Church, 244 Smith Street, Providence. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Providence. The family suggests,as an alternative to flowers, that contributions could be made to the Brendan McKay Memorial Scholarship Fund, Salve Regina University, Ochre Point, Newport, RI 02840 USA. boyleandsonfuneralhome.com
