

Warwick Mary E. Flanagan, 94, of Warwick, and formerly of Providence, died Saturday, April 22, 2017 in the company of her loving family.Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Thomas J. and Elizabeth (Mohan) Flanagan, she lived in Providence most of her life before moving to Warwick in her retirement about 30 years ago.Mary worked for the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company for over forty years, holding the position of New England Marketing Representative before her retirement in 1982. She achieved considerable professional success in an era when it was uncommon for women to serve in corporate leadership positions. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, a 1936 graduate of Saint Pius V School and a 1940 graduate of Saint Xavier Academy. While in Warwick, she was a communicant of the former St. William Church and more recently returned to St. Pius V Church. During her retirement, Mary volunteered as a Chaplin's Assistant at St. Joseph's Hospital and also knitted hats and scarves for those in need.Mary enjoyed life, family and friends, and traveled the world. She was proud of her Irish heritage and kept in regular contact with her extended family from Chicago and County Leitrim, Ireland. Her Catholic faith sustained her throughout her life.She leaves a niece, Providence Councilwoman Jo-Ann (Flanagan) Ryan and her husband Thomas J. Ryan, Esq; nephew, Thomas J. Flanagan, II and his wife Carol (DelConte) Flanagan; great nephews, Brendan Flanagan Ryan, Esq. and Kyle Thomas Flanagan; a great niece, Megan Flanagan Ryan, TCRG and her fiancAC., Kyle J. Lynch; Mary was predeceased by her loving brother and sister-in-law, Thomas J. Flanagan and Eva T. (George) Flanagan.The funeral will be held on Thursday, at 8:45 am, from the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith Street, Providence. Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in Saint Pius V Church, Eaton Street, Providence. Burial will be in Saint Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket. Visiting hours Wednesday, 5:00 - 8:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to Saint Pius V Elementary School, 49 Elmhurst Ave, Providence, RI 02908 in her memory will be appreciated.
