

Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Matthew A. Clarkin and Elsie A. (Hanes) Clarkin.
Matthew was a devoted father to his children, Matthew Clarkin (Diane) and Kellianne White (Andrew) and a cherished grandfather to Hayden, Dylan, Evan, Ethan, and Ella. He was a loving brother to Elsie Diggins, William Clarkin (Elizabeth), and Daniel Clarkin (Maureen). He was predeceased by his sisters, Patricia MacLellan and Rosemary Clarkin, and his brothers, Robert Clarkin and Alan Clarkin. Matthew was also preceded in death by his brothers-in-law, Grant MacLellan and James Diggins, as well as his sister-in-law, Delia Clarkin. He leaves behind his long-time, dear friend Myra Gillen, along with many beloved nieces and nephews.
Matthew graduated from Central High School and proudly served in the United States Army before returning to Rhode Island. He spent many years working for Canada Dry, and later with the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority, where he drove for over 25 years. A longtime active member of Ireland 32 and the Ceilidhe Club, Matthew was known for his kindness, compassion, and generosity. His humor, caring nature, and the genuine way he touched the lives of everyone around him made him truly special.
His visitation will be held Thursday, March 27, 2025 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. and funeral Friday, March 28, 2025 at 8:15 a.m. from the Russell J. Boyle and Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith Street, Providence followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in St. Robert Bellarmine Church, 1804 Atwood Ave, Johnston. Burial will follow in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
