Robert Michael Butler, Sr

Robert M. Butler Sr., 74, (Ret. Capt. PFD) of Providence, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 28, 2013 at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Jean E. (McCarthy) Butler. They were married for 46 years.Born in Providence, he was the son of the late John C. and Anna May (Floody) Butler.Bob served his country proudly with the United States Marine Corps. Upon his honorable discharge, he was appointed to the Providence Fire Department in 1964. He was promoted to dispatcher Lieutenant in 1980 and then dispatcher Captain in 1987. He retired after 30 years of service.He was a member of the Providence Fire Fighters Union, Local 799, Retired Providence Police and Fire Fighters Association, and the Providence Permanent Fireman's Relief Association.Mr. Butler was an avid Boston Red Sox Fan, and enjoyed spending time with his family.Besides his wife, he leaves his three children, Robert M. Butler, Jr. (Lieut. PFD), and his wife, Kristie of Cranston, Kevin M. Butler, and his wife, Tania, of Johnston, and Dawn M. Crothers, of Warwick; a sister, Shirley A. Quirk, of Coventry; and his six grandchildren, Sgt. Elizabeth S. Butler,USMC, Jared Kennedy, Robert M. Butler, III, Courtney and Mark Crothers, and Victoria Butler. He was the brother of the late John C. Butler, Jr. (Ret. PFD Fire Marshall) and Virginia M. Buffone.His funeral will be held on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at 9:00 am, from the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith Street, Providence, followed by a funeral service at 10:00 am, in the funeral home. Interment with military honors will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Providence. Visiting hours, Tuesday, December 3, 2013 from 5-8pm.
