Robert “Rob” Pier Swenson, 76, of Smithfield, RI, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2025, after a brief illness. He was the lifelong sweetheart and devoted husband of Dr. Norma-Ann (DiLibero) Swenson, with whom he shared a life full of adventure, laughter, and unwavering love.
Raised in North Providence, Rob was the beloved son of the late Herbert and Ann (Crocenzi) Swenson, and brother of the late Herbert Swenson, Jr. From a young age, Rob was known for his kindness, strong work ethic, and playful sense of humor. He grew up playing basketball at the Herbert Swenson, Jr. Courts, always surrounded by lifelong friends including Fitz, Burm, and Kenny.
A proud member of the Local 271, Rob worked as a heavy construction laborer and left his mark— literally— by cement-signing many buildings across Rhode Island. He later pursued a career in home building and retired as a tractor-trailer driver for Winter Co/Huttig. Rob loved his work, but his greatest joy was found in the life he built with Norma and their many shared adventures.
A true outdoorsman, Rob was happiest exploring the open roads of the United States in his RV, Norma by his side and his faithful dog riding shotgun. He spent countless cherished days at his log cabin in the Maine woods, where he could fully embrace his rugged spirit. Rob was the kind of man who was always ready to lend a hand—whether helping friends with construction projects, moving the next generation into college dorms or giving driving lessons, he showed up with a big heart and a joke at the ready to keep everyone laughing.
Rob was the loving brother-in-law of Joseph DiLibero and Nancy Corelli, Thomas DiLibero, Ann Mary and Joseph DeAngelis, and Marisa and Gabriel Rizzo. He was a beloved uncle to Julia, Eliza, and Ben DeAngelis, and Martine, Sophie, and Camille Rizzo. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law, David DiLibero. Known for his humor and easy charm, Rob always preferred the “kids’ table,” where he could instigate mischief and delight with his quick wit.
Friends and loved ones are invited to celebrate Rob’s life during visiting hours on Monday, September 8, 2025 from 9:30-11:00 AM in the PONTARELLI-MARINO FUNERAL HOME, 971 Branch Avenue, Providence, followed by a prayer service in the funeral home at 11:00 AM. Burial will be private at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Rob’s memory may be made to the Rhode Island SPCA, honoring his lifelong love for animals.
Rob’s warmth, humor, and big-hearted nature will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who were lucky enough to know him.
