

ProvidenceStephen T. Gonsalves, 51, (Ret. Sgt. P.P.D) of Providence, passed away suddenly on Friday, February 20, 2015 at home. He was the loving husband of Xiomara "Sam" (Vargas) Gonsalves.Born in Providence, he was a son of Mary "Betty" (Fox) Gonsalves and the late Joseph R. Gonsalves (Ret. Major P.P.D).He served his country proudly with the United States Marine Corps.Stephen was a police officer with the Providence Police Department for 21 years, retiring in 2010 as a Sergeant. He served as a patrolman for ten years before being promoted to the Detective Division, where he served for eight years, until his promotion to Sergeant in 2007. He was currently employed at Flood Ford, East Greenwich.He was a member of the Providence Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge # 3, and the Retired Providence Police and Firefighters Association.Besides his wife and mother, he leaves his siblings, Sgt. William J. "Billy" Gonsalves (Ret. P.P.D), James M. Gonsalves, Carol A. Crevier and Lori A. Gonsalves-Casale; and his nieces and nephew, Casey, Justin, and Sydney.Stephen's funeral will be held on Tuesday, at 8:30 am, from the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 142 Centerville Road, (Rt117) Warwick. Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in Saint Matthew Church, Elmwood Avenue, Cranston. Burial, with military honors, will be in Saint Ann Cemetery, Cranston. Visiting hours Monday 4:00 -8:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 1210 Pontiac Avenue, Cranston, RI 02920, in his memory would be appreciated.
