

NORTH PROVIDENCE - FLANAGAN, Thomas J., 82, died Thursday at home. He was the beloved husband of Eva T. (George) Flanagan. They had been married 51 years. Born in Providence, a son of the late Thomas J. and Elizabeth M. (Mohan) Flanagan, he had lived in North Providence for the past 34 years. Mr. Flanagan had been a Sergeant with the Providence Police Department for 25 years. He was assigned to the traffic division and was one of the first motorcycle officers of the department. After his police career, he worked as an Operations Officer for the former R.I. Hospital Trust National Bank in Providence for 20 years, retiring in 1989. For the past 18 years he has worked for the Rhode Island House of Representatives serving in several capacities including Deputy House Recording Clerk. He was a WWII Navy veteran, who earned three combat stars while serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He was involved in several major campaigns, including Okinawa and Saipan, and the liberation of the Philippines. He was a member of the Providence F.O.P, Lodge #3, and was a member and past president of the Retired Providence Police & Fire Association. He was a former member of the Providence Anti-Arson Task Force. He was a communicant of St. Pius V Church, and was a 1938 graduate of St. Pius V School, and a 1941 graduate of LaSalle Academy. He was a member of PALS, and was a former CYO basketball coach at St. Augustine's School. Besides his wife, he leaves his children, Thomas J. Flanagan, II and his wife Carol (DelConte) Flanagan of North Scituate, and Jo-Ann Ryan and her husband Thomas J. Ryan, Esq. of Providence; his sister Mary E. Flanagan of Warwick; and his grandchildren Brendan Flanagan Ryan, Megan Flanagan Ryan, and Kyle Thomas Flanagan. His funeral will be Tuesday at 9am from the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith Street, Providence. Mass of Christian Burial at 10am in St. Pius V Church, Eaton Street. Burial will be in Mt. St. Mary Cemetery. Visitation Monday 2-4 & 7-9pm.
