

North Providence William G. Dugan, Jr., 80, of North Providence, died peacefully at home on Monday, January 23, 2012. He was the husband of Barbara M. (Palmer) Dugan. Bill was best known for his service to the State of Rhode Island in a number of capacities, most notably eight years as Chief of Staff during the Administration of Governor J. Joseph Garrahy. Following his tenure with the Governor, he became Assistant Director of Administration for five years, before retiring.To his family and friends, Bill will be remembered as an avid golfer and sports fan. He was a devoted follower of the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, Providence Friars and Boston Bruins. He was a longstanding member of Metacomet Country Club. In his later years, Bill rarely missed a LaSalle Academy football game. Born in Woonsocket, Bill was a son of the late William G. and Jeanne E. (Laroe) Dugan, Sr. He was a 1948 graduate of LaSalle Academy.Bill gave back to his country and community by serving proudly in the United States Army during the Korean War. Bill was also elected to the North Providence School Committee, serving as Chairman for a number of years. He also was active in the Rhode Island Knights of Columbus, holding the distinction of State Deputy.In addition to his wife Barbara, he leaves a daughter, Karen A. Spina and her husband Kevin; two sons, Richard J. Dugan and his wife Ann, David W. Dugan, Esq. and his wife Barbara Grady, Esq., and seven loving grandchildren. He was a brother of the late Donald R. Dugan.Visiting hours will be held Thursday, from 3 - 7 pm, in the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith Street, Providence. Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am on Friday, in Saint Augustine Church, 639 Mount Pleasant Avenue, Providence. Relatives and friends are invited. Burial will be in Saint Ann Cemetery, Cranston. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to LaSalle Academy, 612 Academy Avenue, Providence, RI 02908.
