

She graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School in Houston, Texas in 1952. She graduated with her Bachelor's in Elementary Education from Texas Southern University, Houston, Texas in 1956. She received her Master's in special education from University of Denver, Denver, Colorado in 1958. She also received additional certifications at Adams State University, California State College, and the University of Southern Colorado.
She became one of the first African American teachers in Southern Colorado in 1959. She worked with Pueblo School District 60 from 1959-1999. During those years, she taught at Minnequa, McClelland, South Park, Beulah Heights, and Colombian Elementary schools. In her earlier years, she primarily taught Special Education.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Joseph Madison Harris Sr., her parents, Garner and Jessie Annie Ruth Allbritton Johnson, her sisters Mary Helen Ollison Reed, Catherine Louise Johnson Kerr, Cardelia Johnson Cathcart Proby, and Garner Ella Johnson Roberson, her nephews Harvey Cathcart Jr., Garland Roberson, and Niece, Linda Ann Roberson.
She is survived by her two sons, Joseph (Joey) Madison Harris Jr. and Troy Garner Harris.
By her wishes, she will have a private cremation service. In lieu of flowers for the safety of her feline grandchildren, Baby Britches, Hissenlooper, Rocky, Scout, Smokey and Shadow, please donate to the Humane Society, local Animal Shelter, and/or No-Kill Shelter.
