

Anthony V. Berumen, 98, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2011, surrounded by his family. He was born on July 20, 1913 in Jerez, Zacatecas, Mexico to the union of Marina and Adolpho Berumen. Anthony was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of 76 years, Marie (sweet Lili Marleen); in-laws Anita and Nels Johnson; daughter Mariana; sister Ruth (Manuel) Godinez; brothers Joe (Socorro), Jesse (Phyllis), Adolph; granddaughter Debra Leslie; grandsons Andrew Ronald Berumen and Kenneth Charles Aragon; brother-in-laws Valentine Jiminez, Paul Larry, John, and Lloyd (Priscilla) Johnson; sister-in-law Martha Johnson; and best friends Rose and Fermin Ortiz, Albuquerque, N.M. He is survived by a sister Tillie Navarro; brother-in-law Joe Johnson, Price, Utah; sister-in-law Ann Johnson, Lakewood, CO; his children, Diana (Roger) Gomez, Patricia (Edwin) Espinoza, Anita (Clem) Aragon, Marina (Vic) Velarde, Adolph (Alice), Anthony Jr. (Lili), Ronald (Kathy) and Michael Berumen; stepson Kun Huang; grandchildren, Aja (Mike Soto), Ian, Aaron, Jason (Desiree) Gomez, Mikayla, Joseph, Sean, Dennis, Curtis, Candace (Joe Martinez) Berumen, Toni Marie (Chuck) Casados, Dee (Kevin) Weber, Kris Aragon, Eddie (Sandra), Eric (Andrea) Espinoza, Monica (Dan) Martinez, Dona (James) Dalton, Tina (Jaime) Pechorak, Michelle (Martin) Vigil, Anthony (Katie) Berumen, and Denise Werwick; 51 great grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildrenand numerous Godchildren. Anthony served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in Italy, as far as the Austrian border, awarded the European Theater ribbon with two battle stars, the Bronze Star Medal and Combat Infantry Badge. He was Honorably Discharged on October 23, 1945. Anthony owned and operated Bessemer Garage and Berumen’s Main Gate Tavern until his retirement in 1978. He enjoyed his mechanic work, hunting and fishing trips, especially to Blue Mesa, and vacation trips to Mexico and Albuquerque, N.M. Anthony was a member of the Bessemer Merchants Association, yearly sponsor of the Old Timer’s Baseball Association, and served as a Scoutmaster with Troop 8 through Mt. Carmel Church. The family would like to thank Dr. George Birks, staff at Sangre de Christo Hospice, daughter Diana Gomez and granddaughter Aja for their devoted care of our father 24/7, and special thanks to Socorro Martinez and Gilbert Martinez. Also a special thanks to our special (like a sister) Nancy Ortiz-Gandara, Albuquerque, N.M., and nieces Josephine Avalos and Rita Morales for their support and frequent visits which meant a lot and were very special.
