Eugene was a World War II veteran, having earned the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He entered the United States Army on January 14, 1942. He was sent overseas during the ‘Battle of the Coral Sea’. While in Adelaide, Australia, he received combat training and invasive procedures in Newcastle, which included assault boats. He went to Brisbane to join a convoy going to Port Moresby, New Guinea. Eugene was wounded in the Buna area by a grenade. He contracted malaria while in New Guinea. He was assigned to amphibious training to give instruction and demonstrations on amphibious landings in preparation for the invasion of the Philippines. He was discharged in May of 1945.
Upon returning home, he worked in the Sugar Factory and later married Alice Minjarez.
Eugene was extremely grateful for the personal care given to him by several caregivers. He thought of them as ‘God sent’. The family is eternally thankful to the excellent care and attentiveness given to Eugene by his personal caregivers: Deana, Charlene, Mary, Daphne, James, Mark, Yvonne, and Mandy. There were also other previous caregivers that the family much appreciated. In addition, the family thanks the program resources provided by the excellent Veterans Programs staff (HBPC, Caregiver Support, Respite).
Eugene’s huge presence will be so missed. His daily wisdom and lessons will continue for many years to come.
A Funeral Service will be held at T.G. McCarthy Funeral Home, located at 329 Goodnight Ave, Pueblo, CO 81004, United States. The service is scheduled for November 8, 2025, at 10:30 am.
