Born in Rockvale, Colorado, she was the daughter of Helen and Gregorio Huerta. She attended Pueblo Catholic High School and graduated in 1950. Out of high school she attended night classes and worked at the Pueblo Ordinance Depot.
She met her future husband, Louis H Lazo in 1954, they fell in love and were married on May 21, 1955 – her 23rd birthday. They were inseparable for 54 years until Lou’s death in 2009.
Phyllis was a proud and determined woman. She was dedicated to her husband and her children and there was nothing she wouldn’t do to help her immediate and extended family. Her steadiness, determination, and work ethic made her a role model for her children and grandchildren. As a young mother she worked to support her husband, maintain the house, and guide and nurture her children. While her job as mother was primary, she took on extra work to support the household. She baked and sold wedding cakes and sewed Barbie clothes which she packaged and offered for sale at Christmas time. As the children grew and entered school, she reluctantly became an Avon Lady and discovered that she enjoyed meeting and providing a service to her neighbors. She maintained her territory for over 40 years. Later in life she worked at Pueblo City Schools, District 60, retiring in 2020 at age 87
She was preceded in death by her parents Helen and Gregorio, husband Lou, and brothers Frank Huerta, Encarnacion (Ed) Huerta, and sister Helen Vaughn.
