Joan was born on January 18, 1935, in Dewar, Iowa, where she spent her early years forming the warm spirit, resilience, and joyful outlook that would define her life. From an early age, she felt called to care for others — a calling that guided her lifelong career in nursing. After graduating from nursing school, Joan worked in OB/GYN, helping bring countless babies into the world. Her dedication to education led her to earn her Master of Science in Nursing, and she went on to serve as an administrator at Bethel School of Nursing in Colorado Springs and later as Director of the Nursing Program at Pueblo Community College. Through her compassion, intelligence, and mentorship, she shaped generations of nurses and touched innumerable lives.
In June of 1955, Joan married the love of her life, Dr. Sylvester “Sy” Massmann. Together they built a life grounded in love, laughter, and devotion to family. Joan was a remarkable mother to her children, Tom and Ann, and a proud grandmother to Jaqi Massmann (David), David Massmann (Annah), and Ryan Massmann (Morgan). Her heart expanded even further as a deeply devoted great-grandmother to Taylor, Natalie, Logan, Teagan, Audrey, and Elliot — six bright lights who brought endless joy to her life.
Anyone who met Joan quickly noticed her warmth, quick wit, and infectious laughter. She truly loved life. A Master Gardener, Joan found peace in nurturing growth, whether in her garden or in the people around her. She loved playing games with her family and was a true card shark and a master at dominoes. Joan also enjoyed puzzles and played bridge regularly with several groups of friends. She even welcomed the occasional adventure to Cripple Creek to test her luck at video poker — always with humor and fun.
Joan accepted people as they were and saw the good in everyone. Her compassion, generosity, and joyful presence made her a beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, friend, and mentor. In her later months, she cherished meaningful time with family and friends, including the special bond she formed with Michele and Michele’s welcoming family, whose kindness meant so much to her. She was grateful for visits from loved ones from Iowa, treasured time with nieces and nephews, and lifelong friendships that remained strong through the years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Angela and John Falk; her beloved husband, Sy; her daughter, Ann; her daughter-in-law, Jeannine Massmann; her sisters Helen and Marian; and her brothers Ed and Larry. She is survived by her son, Tom, along with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, her brother John and sister Marlys, extended family, and countless friends who will forever carry her memory in their hearts.
A Celebration of Life will be held February 17, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at T.G. McCarthy Funeral Homes. Inurnment will follow from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Imperial Memorial Gardens Funeral, Cremation & Cemetery.
Joan spent her life caring for children and families, and in honor of that legacy, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Children’s Hospital Colorado.
Joan’s remarkable spirit, sharp mind, and radiant laughter will live on in the memories of all who loved her. Though her bright light no longer shines in this world, it continues to glow in the hearts she touched. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
