Laurie L. Cain was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother whose strength, grace, and generosity left a lasting mark on all who knew her.
Born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, Laurie was the youngest daughter of the late Theodore and Alma Mezger. She attended the University of Nebraska, where she studied accounting—a foundation that would support both her professional and personal life for decades to come.
Laurie met her beloved husband, Roger Cain, one summer day, and their love quickly blossomed into a lifelong partnership. Married in 1976, the two journeyed westward, living in Utah, Texas, California, Montana, and eventually making their home in Colorado and Wyoming.
A true matriarch, Laurie balanced the demands of family and business with remarkable poise. While raising two sons—and in many ways guiding her husband, too—she served as CFO of the family’s businesses, overseeing finances with skill and integrity. She also managed the ranch finances, tended to daily chores from horseback riding to bottle-feeding calves, all while keeping a warm and welcoming home. Her gourmet cooking was legendary among family and friends, with meals that were as delicious as they were lovingly prepared.
Laurie and Roger shared a deep love for the American West, spending countless days exploring its vast landscapes. From snowmobiling to horseback riding in the Rocky Mountains, she reveled in nature’s beauty. And yet, she found equal peace in the quiet comforts of home—curled up by a fire, wrapped in a blanket, surrounded by the people she loved.
Laurie is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, Roger Cain; her children Matthew (Nikki) Cain and Jonathan (Olivia) Cain; and her treasured grandchildren, Bryce, Shaylee, and Paisley. She is also remembered by her siblings Elizabeth “Becky” (Danny) Buzbee and Theodore “Mark” (Jacki) Mezger and their families, along with many beloved in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A celebration of Laurie’s life will be held on May 30, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Huerfano County Bible Church, 601 S. Leon Avenue, Walsenburg, Colorado. A reception will follow at the Walsenburg Mercantile, 408 Russel Street.
The Cain family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to all who supported Laurie—and them—during her time of struggle. Your kindness and presence have meant more than words can express.
