Mercy was born on November 20, 1934, to Jose and Estefanita Martinez. From a young age, she carried a deep sense of responsibility and compassion, helping to raise her siblings and developing the nurturing spirit that would define her life.
Education was both her passion and her calling. Mercy earned her Master’s degree in Education and began her distinguished career at the Alamosa Head Start. She later worked with BOCES and ultimately retired from Haskin Elementary in Center, Colorado. Known to many as the famous “Mrs. Chavez,” she was a dedicated educator who found joy in attending workshops, collaborating with colleagues, and shaping the lives of countless students. Her influence in the classroom extended far beyond academics—she taught with patience, strength, and heart.
Outside of her career, Mercy treasured time spent with her family. She loved day trips to Cripple Creek with her sons and daughter, summer camping adventures with friends, and fishing on Blue Mesa with her beloved Ernie and the grandchildren. These simple joys created lifelong memories for those fortunate enough to share them.
Mercy was the proud mother of Patricia; Raymond (LyVonne); Joseph (Maria); James (Tammy); Stephen Sr. (Angie) Noriega; and Daniel (Monique) Chavez. Her love extended far beyond her immediate children—she took immense pride in helping raise her nieces, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Affectionately known as “Grandma Mercy,” she was a steady source of love, wisdom, and unwavering support.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Ernesto Chavez of Pueblo, who lovingly cared for her until her final breath. Her legacy lives on through her brother Danny, grandchildren: Joshua Sr. (Yolanda), Stephen Jr. (Nura), Ryan (Michelle), Bryan, Taylor, and Jeanette (Mike) Noriega; Gustavo (Sonia) Vasquez; Alicia (Derek) Sisneros; Damian and Lindsey Chavez; and Melody (Cody) Dame.
Her great-grandchildren include Krystiana (Anthony), Joshua Jr., Mercedes, Sharonae, Neesa, Khrystian, Daniela, Brindi, Nickolas, Chayce, Jett, Rory, Brody, Maddy, Natalie, Kiley, and Mikey. She was also blessed with great-great-grandchildren Analicia, Ezra, Isla, Mailani, Justin, Taylor, and Mia.
Mercy was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings Ernest, Marcella, Maria “Mary”, and Freddie; her son Joey and her daughter-in-law Marie.
She will be deeply missed by all who knew her, especially her special nieces Karen, Shalamar and Theresa, and her cherished friends Gigi and Jellybean.
Mercy’s life was one of service, devotion, and unconditional love. Her legacy will continue in the generations she nurtured, the students she inspired, and the family she held together with grace and strength. She leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a family forever grateful for the gift of her love.
Please join us in celebrating her life.
