Stanton Hiatt passed away peacefully at his home in Beulah, Colorado on July 4, 2018 at the age of 91. He was preceded in death by his son, Mitchell Hiatt and grandson, Michael Hiatt. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Billie Jo; sons Michael Hiatt of Wyoming, and Mark Hiatt of Beulah, and extended family members, Diana and Philip Quattlebaum of Florence, Colorado. Stanton is also survived by grandchildren Jamaica, Josh, Joe, Christy, and Matthew and four great-grandchildren. The youngest of eleven children, Stanton was born on March 1, 1927 to Elbert and Merle Hiatt of Elbert County, Colorado. Stanton was raised on the family homestead in El Paso County. His early years were spent working on the family ranch with his father, and helping with the work on his brothers’ and neighboring farms. In his spare time (when there was spare time), Stanton enjoyed hunting and fishing. After graduating from Eastonville School, Stanton proudly served as a medic on the hospital ship, USS Benevolence in the Pacific during World War II. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in July, 1946. Upon his return to Colorado, Stanton purchased land in the Black Forest area where he farmed and operated a small business. In the early 1950s, while attending a Peyton High School basketball game, his eye fell upon an especially attractive cheerleader named Billie Jo. The rest, as they say, is history. Stanton and BJ were married on May 23, 1956 and resided in Beulah where Stanton was employed in with the Charles Jones Lumber Company. Stanton’s contributions to the Beulah community have been numerous. He was active with the Beulah Melodrama, the Rifle Club, and was Head Huntsman for the Beulah Yule Log festivities. In the mid 1960s, Stanton became Beulah’s Fire Chief, a role in which he served for 23 years. Stanton continued to enjoy hunting and fishing across the state. He also cherished his role as Grandfather and Great Grandfather. Stanton will be sadly missed by family and friends. Services are being held at Imperial Chapel Friday July 27 at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sangre de Cristo Hospice in Stanton's name.
